American History courses featured a plan in which teachers organized the sequence of events, assignments, and ideas into a coordinated schedule. Once during each cycle classes met together for large group instruction which included panel discussions, lectures, and film presentations. Students taking Urban Affairs extended their concept of “the city” with the aid of guest speakers, field trips, and newspaper study. Under a release-time system they were allowed to leave Cathedral to research different aspects of city commerce, culture, and government. Senior government students centered their studies on foreign policy, political parties, and the application of the U.S. Constitution. Once again the class organized the Model Senate. Their junior counterparts participated in a mock Constitutional Convention depicting the different view points that formed the basis of our present government. Teachers implemented anew concept in education by introducing a community involvement program in which students participated in local government by working with the mayoral staff and the Urban League. Eight students participated in the Framingham State College Essay Contest and Conference. They submitted compositions dealing with major political movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. Sixteen members of the World Problems class attended the Model United Nations Congress held at Assumption College. Through the use of new ideas and new teaching techniques, the social studies department achieved its goal of making history a journey of discovery for students.

Wright Press constitutes change in technique, ideas The installation of the Wright Press has added a new dimension to Cathedral artists’ interests and expanded the offerings of the art program. This press, the only one of its kind in the area assists the students with such printing jobs as etching and lithographing and other engraving procedures. A new stipulation in the Art Department’s format is the process of continuing onto Art II only by the recommendation of the interviews with the Art I and Art II teachers. A portfolio prepared by the student must also be approved. Numerous projects were displayed around the school thanks to the creative endeavors of the Art students. Among the projects were mosaics, water colors, ceramics, and paintings.
