Gym classes welcome new coaches with enthusiasm The old and the new joined hands this year to expand Cathedral’s Physical Education program. Sr. Beverly Rochford and Mrs. Jean Joseph teamed up with Coach John Michalick, Mr. Richard Discenza and Mr. William Wise, to offer the freshmen and sophomores a diversified and interesting program. A course in self-defense was something new for the girls who also, when the snow finally arrived, were able to enjoy the purchase of five toboggans. Gymnastics was a first for the boys who learned various floor exercises and the use of gymnastic equipment. The courses that were repeated for another year were girls’ basketball, tennis and skating plus boys’ football, wrestling and skating. The only coed course offered was volleyball where teams competed in around-robin tournament. The main objective of the program was to give the students a desire to keep themselves in shape. lod ‘

Industrial Arts An eye-catcher again this year, Industrial Arts offered a wide and varied program. For students planning an art-related career, a two year course consisting of Basic Tech and Engineering Drawing provided the needed experience to give future artists a helping hand in grasping perspective, proportion, and form. To give students a better idea of basic technical skills and to help them become more aware of the problems of construction and design, a three year course consisting of Mechanical Drawing I, II, and Fundamentals of Engineering were studied. These courses proved to be the medium for encouraging interest in such fields as architecture and machine tool design. Using such basic equipment as compasses and lead pencils, the Industrial Arts students added their talents to Practical Arts Night. Being able to display their projects gave them a sense of accomplishment. 54
