Calculator multiplies math program | parry of the Solution — youre part Electronics entered the math department this year in the form of a programmable calculator which enabled students to compute with great speed and accuracy. Some teachers familiarized students with the metric system through the use of problems involving metric measurements, worksheets, and related materials. Students also investigated areas not normally covered in the classroom, such as topology and non-Euclidean geometry, with the help of slides, filmstrips, and outside research. Thirty-five students participated in the Math Convention held at the Civic Center in November by displaying projects and acting as student aides. Cathedral students also exhibited projects at the annual Math Fair, which was held at AIC in May. The National Prize Exam once again challenged the abilities of Cathedral mathematicians, while four juniors and three seniors received Certificates of Merit for their performance in the State Prize Exam. Businesswomen Cathedral’s Business department continued to be ruled by young businesswomen despite being in the midst of a male dominated world. The men have the upper hand in numbers only in Accounting, while the women have an overwhelming edge in the secretarial arts. A large number of business students plan for their futures and obtain jobs through the Career Resource Center which is directed by Sr. Loretto Thomas. The resource center is open to all students for career planning and has a file of jobs presently available. 46
