English department gains new look Many changes in English occurred this year under the direction of new department heads, Sr. Ann Lynch and Mrs. Shirley Pratt. New teachers also helped give the department a different look. Mrs. Alexander taught Humanities classes about the cultures of America and Russia through visitors, lecturers and plays. Students researched Russian food and customs and then had a Russian Christmas party to which they invited guests. Tom Crourst, a student from California, came to speak to classes on his experiences of hitchhiking across the U.S. while Ted Piekos spoke on Australia where he lives and works. This year, as in the past, English students continued to choose their own course of study. A change in the curriculum was the separation of Poetry and Drama courses which were previously offered as one. “Effective oral Communication and Debate” was a new course offered this year to Juniors and Seniors. It was taught by Sr. Lorraine Henry and concentrated on organizing and researching a topic well and being able to present the ideas clearly.
