Outside activities broaden scope of language dept. Language classes did not restrict themselves to their classrooms and textbooks. All language students prepared research projects which aided in developing an awareness of foreign customs and cultures. German and Spanish students conducted skits in an effort to gain a better understanding of their respective languages. Eight Spanish students brought back first hand information from Spain, which they were able to use this year in their classes. A rare treat was served to the German students when they took a trip to the Fort Restaurant. French students, for the first time, participated in the American Association of Teachers of Frenc h exam. The test was administered according to the students’ level of advancement. A French instructor from A.I.C., Miss Deitz, volunteered her services and visited French classes during the month of January. Her supplementary instructions aided students in their pronunciation and vocabulary. On an international level, a trip to France and one to Germany was open to all French and German students. 36

Lab assistants enrich Science with patience and talent 38 To better acquaint students with laboratory techniques, the Science Department expanded by offering a Laboratory Assistant Course. For the first time the science teachers graded on a pass fail basis, for a full credit. After receiving general instruction in laboratory procedure the assistants chose a teacher and helped with class experiments and in the resource center. Biology students implemented their study of living organisms with various activities such as incubation of chickens, dissection of frogs and worms, and the observation of the dissection of a stillborn lamb. An evironmental study observing plants and pond life, followed by independent study was conducted by the AP Biology Class. Included this year with the quarter courses, Astronomy, Pathology and Computer Science, was the new offering Science and Society. A year’s course of studies could be selected from these four courses or in combination with Environmental Science, a semester course. Physics classes set up a telescope in order to watch the progress of the Kohoutek Comet. This year’s Science Program attempted progress by broadening the course possibilities for student selection. cence viecae NE i 4 ca f a : Ip Aw Veer hie “a 4B) % te ae) + P ob : ‘ rk ‘ - My ‘f ' $e eh FAet t Sts : % 3 e } y i ei 4s ‘ ws a
