Panther batmen clash with foes in tight city league race Greatly exceeding their pre-season expectations the 72 baseball squad fought their way into the Western Mass. semi-finals and lost a heart-breaking elimination game to Tech. Losing six key players to graduation, the team was 6-2 in league play, and 11-3 overall. By the midseason mark, John Bodolay and Phil Suse, ’72 grads, had established themselves as standout sluggers with .560 and .469 averages respectively, and scored or drove in nearly half of Cathedral's runs. Ken MacLeod, Tom Savoy, and Tim Dunn showed consistent prowess at the plate, gaining more hits every game. Keying the Panthers’ success was the mound duo of Paul Stelzer and Bob O Herron, both displaying their talents with some clutch performances. Paul's best showing was in the Classical game, where he pitched 7 1 3 innings of relief, enabling the trailing Panthers to pull out a 10-6 win. Bob Duquette, Glenn Ligenza, and Ken MacLeod earned praise as defensive players. The squad played much better than Coach Dan Balicki's pre-season hopes of “just a .500 season, but couldn't muster up enough punch to stay alive in the playoffs. 9O ee ee a ines RET he Rm ae capac gh a ee ees bad Tae oe ee ae ras Us m3 ae ilk CEPI BERR ar Blaine Oe . eo ort wo ae : eeemton PES SY AR han % ee 1 A crucial point of the game captures Coach Dan Balicki’s full attention. 2 Whipping his bat around ... 3 Paul Stelzer bunts on the squeeze play 4 and he is off and running. 5 Exasperation covers Glen Ligenza’s face as he receives a ‘Strike Three!” call. 6 Scoring the go-ahead run, slugger Tom Savoy receives con- gratulations from teammate Phil Suse. 7 Home run swing of Brian McKenna s, boosts his teams efforts

CHS bowlers strike successful year The CHS bowling team, harboring a full squad of dedicated bowlers and only in its second year of existence, took a step upward in its climb to come atop the ladder of success. This year s team, under Fr. O' Hear’s direction, with the experience of captain Steve Agin and the help of Barry Gaudette, Tom Johnson, Joe Leonezyk, Bill Shewchuk, and Tom Nolan, won 24 points in match play, and gained 11,000 pin falls to make a strong third place finish in their tough bowling division, which was much better than the showing of last year s novice team. Active involvement by its players, as well as the growing interest aroused at Cathedral, provided the team with the drive they needed to prove themselves a better squad. 1 After his release, Dave Payne's face depicts a hopeful win. 2 Following through, Tom John- son uses wrist action for a successful knock- down. 3 Captain Steve Agin displays style and determination during tourney play Bowling team: first row: Tom Johnson, Steve Agin, Dave Payne, Thaddeus Witasezek, Mike Stasiow- ski; second row; Barry Gaudette, Tom Nolan, Paul Wilson, Mike Plasse, Bill Witasezek 92
