Communication, culture accent language programs With world travel becoming a reality for more and more people, the language department renewed its efforts to teach students basic communication skills in French, Spanish, and German. “As Schools Match Wits” was the favorite game of French students as they tested their pronunciation and knowledge of French culture. Fourth-year students were given the opportunity to pace their own learning rate in independent study projects. Spanish students pursued civilization and customs of the Spanish-speaking world. Individual research and the undertaking of such projects as a Spanish meal brought the students to a deeper understanding of another culture. Improvised skits and dialogues enabled students of German to use effectively the skills taught. German III students put to practice their ever-increasing knowledge of German idiom in frequent and heated discussion. Language skills overflowed into the halls and hardly a day passed without hearing ‘Bonjour, “ Hola,” “ Gruss Gott.” 1 All eyes are on books as last night's homework is reviewed. 2 Tests taken in language lab call for Eve Breitung’s undivided attention. 3 Board work helps Stephen Cote improve his Spanish. 4 Jill Duda and Melanie Davis prepare Spanish culture slides. 5 Concentrating on the tape recording, Mike Dahlen listens intently. 6 Teammate Mary LaFlamme awaits her turn to “match wits” in French
