Soccer squad recovers to capture first state championship After a dismal start, winning only two of their first eight games, the soccer squad came up with four straight victories to earn a berth in the Western Mass Tournament with a 6-3-3 record. Strong both offensively and defensively, the 72 soccer squad showed the balance needed for achampionship team. The offensive punch was supplied by Paul Stelzer, Steve Lortie, and Jim Berg, re $l aE ae : ae) 7 “ a ee neces the team’s leading scorers. Goalie Ken MacLeod received good defensive support from his brother Dave, the outstanding fullback, and from halfback Peter Haley. Fiery Glenn Ligenza was all over the field forthe team, and according to coach Lee Kenworthy served as the squad's sparkplug. In tournament action, the booters whipped Monument Mountain 5-0 in the opening round, and followed that with a 4-1 victory over undefeated Leominster, and a 2-1 win over Pittsfield, also previously unbeaten. In the final against first-seeded Chicopee, the Panthers fought back 5 from a one-goal deficit to dethrone the Pacers, 2-1. The booters then took the state title with a 2-1 win over Needham in a physical defensive battle for their ninth straight victory. The squad finished their season by placing second in the New England Tournament. 102

Depth, experience show grapplers way to perfect season The bitter rivalry in tough W Mass wrestling competition continued as Cathedral took the Division I title from formerly invincible Tech and went on to capture first place in the W Mass tourney. Cathedral ended the season in style and with an unblemished 14-0 record as they handed Tech a sound 29-18 defeat to become the only team in history to beat the Tigers twice. The team’s perfect year was credited to its great depth and total determination. Junior standout, Dino Serafino, led the matmen with a point total of 63 and was cited by his teammates and coaches as the outstanding performer Rounding out the top five point-makers were Ed Nugent, Ed Sunter, John Mentor, and Al Joyce. 1 Senior Ed Sunter Sree ca to gain leverage on his opponent. 2 Hoping for a pin, John Dobiecki forces Ken MacLeod to the mats. 3 In a practice session Al Joyce and Tim Dunn lock arms in an elimination round.
