Girls swim team acquires honors during 72- 73 season During their second year WW in competitive swimming the CHS girls’ swim team acquired many honors. Team work prevailed when they were rated third in the medley relay during the Western Mass. Tournament. Under the guidance of co-captains June Hussey and Colleen Shea the squad ranked sixth among fifteen teams - entered in the Tournament. Patty Martinelli brought fame to Cathedral by becoming the Western Mass. diving champion by receiving the outstanding diver s award. As prominent swimmer of the team Joan Daly ranked third in the Mass. 50-meter free style. The combined effort of all resulted in a successful year. 1 With arms extended Barbara Egan races for an early finish. 2 Francine Germaine gasps for breath as she swims to victory. Swim team advances to A division In B division competition, for the first time, Cathedral's swim team took fifth place at W Mass tournament while competing against some of the best teams in the state. This year, fifteen CHS swimmers were sent to compete in the state meet. a “ The team swam to second place in the city championship with ninty-seven points, while two records were broken in the Christmas relay, leaving them only five points away from first place. The swimming season closed with the record score of 11 wins and 4 losses. oe © 1 Perfect pike position is executed by Kevin Mahan. 2 Coach Charles Casserly encourages teamwork among the swimmers. 3 Freshman Jim Skehan vigorously practices his front stroke. 4 Back dive is gracefully performed by Vincent Walsh. Harriers come closer to W Mass record Extending their dual meet streak to 65, the Cathedral cross country team closed in on the record of 72 straight. Under the leadership of coach Paul Whitlock and co-captains Ed Sunter, Neil Garvey, and Mark lanello, cross country develo ped from a group of gifted individuals to a dedicated team. The squad showed great power in taking the Wilbraham and Mt. Herman Invitationals. For the second consecutive year, the sophomore segment won the Catholic Memorial Invitational. In the Western Mass championship, the harriers placed second only to Amherst. One week later they came back to beat Amherst, capturing second place in the state meet. Members especially cited for development were John Toms and Don Fricchone, placing first and second respectively in the Tech meet. John was also listed fourth among the JV top runners.
