To satisfy the varying needs of students, the Theology department took on the task of revising its format. New electives were offered to juniors and seniors while a new series was started for freshmen and sophomores. Freshmen began the program with Discovery in Prayer and in Press. This course was designed to make prayer more meaningful to the student, with a realization of the importance of the media. The sophomores continued the exploration with Discovery in Music and in Advertising, which delves into world problems, while helping to answer the students questions on morality. Juniors broke away from the Discovery series to research the values of community in their three courses, Christian Community, Eastern and Western Mysticism, and Jesus and Prayer. Seniors had a wide range of choices from Marriage to Man in Religionless Society, and Christian Dimensions in Philosophy and Psychology to Man Becoming. Each course is designed to leave the student with a lasting impression of the important relationship between theology and the human community. 1 Freshman girls share with Sr. Elizabeth. 2 Mr Edward Curtin questions students in an infor- mal class discussion. 3 Forgoing their study, many students participate in extra theology classes. 4 A mobile was the result of one sopho- more theology project. 5 Senior boys take a cof- fee break Social Studies program encourages independent work This vear s freshmen were offered two new electives. Non-Western History and a set of quarter courses complemented the previous courses, World and Modern History. Urban Affairs featured guest speakers who accented classroom work, while outside activities promoted independent study by students. The two-year history program offered to juniors emphasized individual efforts in preparing for class discussions and research projects. (gain this year, students taking social studies courses were invited to participate in the Model Senate. The Astronomy classes viewed their topic with audio-visual aids and took field trips to the Seymour Planetarium. From the Environmental Study groups, future ecologists sought answers to the environmental question, while Computer Science students solved intricate problems on the teletype terminal. Guest speakers were featured in Pathology classes. Independent study gave greater freedom and responsibility to the student body as it became a widespread practice. Two Programmed Chemistry courses had students working individually on programmed textbooks, with lab periods weekly. Tests were taken when the students were prepared. Doctors, nurses, technicians, and physical therapists were invited by Physiology classes, thus giving students a broader outlook on paramedical fields. The AP Biology class did extensive individual research, and planned an ecology day. Utilizing four hours of lab a week, the AP Chemistry course gave students a chance for advance d experimenting not possible in conventional classes. The Science Resource Center was always available for those researching and studying. or D 1 Chemistry students listen attentively as Sister Mildred Marengo explains use of the triple- beam balance. 2 Concocting a solution, Kathy Prendergast prepares her lab experiment. 3 Precision is the key to success. 4 Searching for a paramecium, Jim Doty relentlessly gazes through the eyepiece. 5 Physiology students Maureen Donoghue and Michele Dube test for carbohydrates. 6 Raw materials await assault of students. ao ot English Courses stress humanism In addition to Advanced Placement and Honors English previously available, the English department this year offered Honors Humanities to students who had completed two years of the three-year sequential program. Other interested seniors chose General Humanities, a comprehensive exploration through literature of the humanity of “Makers of the Modern World.” For the first time electives were chosen singly, rather than in pairs, giving juniors and seniors a‘ first day of class’ at the end of January. Fourth-year students were given the opportunity to pace their own learning rate in independent study projects. Spanish students pursued civilization and customs of the Spanish-speaking world. Individual research and the undertaking of such projects as a Spanish meal brought the students to a deeper understanding of another culture. Improvised skits and dialogues enabled students of German to use effectively the skills taught. German III students put to practice their ever-increasing knowledge of German idiom in frequent and heated discussion. Language skills overflowed into the halls and hardly a day passed without hearing ‘Bonjour, “ Hola,” “ Gruss Gott.” 1 All eyes are on books as last night's homework is reviewed. 2 Tests taken in language lab call for Eve Breitung’s undivided attention. 3 Board work helps Stephen Cote improve his Spanish. 4 Jill Duda and Melanie Davis prepare Spanish culture slides. 5 Concentrating on the tape recording, Mike Dahlen listens intently. 6 Teammate Mary LaFlamme awaits her turn to “match wits” in French Sus See . e i hares sabia a Selene _ Business Department renders time and service to school Students preparing to enter the world of business gained basic skills in typing, stenography, data processing, office practice, economics and accounting. Along with their regular courses, the business students were responsible for typing and mimeographing the daily bulletin. Data Processing students were accountable for absentee lists which were distributed daily; they aided in printing and sorting quarterly report cards and processing schedules. With the help of the department all willing students were placed in jobs in the business field. ies) wy QC wt Et Ri Ti Yi N vw 8 N 1 Jim Casanova tries his skills at the calcula- tor. 2 Deft fingers handle the keyboard. 3 Business student Louisette Picard operates the duplicating machine 10 1 Perplexed Chris VanderWolk searches for an answer. 2 Joe Reilly goes around in geometric circles. 3 Comic sections are seriously presented by Chris Ott. Math humor blends with hard work A program of independent study was used on a trial basis in some math classes this year. While some individuals thrived on this method, others expressed a desire to resume traditionally taught classes. As a Christmas surprise, ‘Donald Duck in Mathemagic Land,” was viewed by math students. Besides presenting a humorous view of the subject in general, it applied math concepts to a wide range of everyday situations. In the State Prize Math Exam, administered yearly to interested students, senior Edward Koenig qualified as a finalist. 1 Deeply involved in her work, junior Jane Cicerchia artfully paints her urn. 2 Trying her skill at the pottery wheel Kathy Simpson has a little more than luck. 3 Art III student Donna Sady creates her masterpiece. 4 Content with his achievements, George Chartier scans his work. 5 With complete concentration Dave Forest carefully adds the finishing touches to his Greek urn. 6 The essence of art. 7 Creativity at its peak Art overcomes confinements while expanding programs During the past year art has expanded from the confinement of one room to a two-room workshop-studio. Necessary essentials of the studios were new lockers, storage trays, easels, and tables. Art II classes drew figures with school models under the new no-glare centered lights, and sculptured with different media such as plaster, copper, wire and mash. Art III obtained two electric and kick-pottery wheels and combination etching and lithograph press. They also tackled clay molding and ceramics as well as abstract oil painting. Art IV, instituted for the first time, dealt mostly with independent study. During the year each student produced an oil mural. They also worked in ceramics, throwing on the wheel, and aided in the supervision of Art III's oil paintings. Room 216 was used solely for Art I classes which for the first time were comprised mostly of freshmen. Their main project was constructing Grecian urns as various in size and shape as the students. Department teaches boys to survive The men of Cathedral earned how to survive without the women of the house around this vear. new course, Bachelor Foods, was opened to any junior or senior boy who had the desire to learn how to cook, prepare, and serve simple dishes. In addition to actual cooking they learned how to buy food and abide by a budget. It also prepared some for culinary school. On the other hand, the girls took a more intense course centering on gourmet cooking. Other household duties were taught in both courses. lany events had the good fortune to have these chefs prepare a meal or buffet for them, such as Model Senate, Practical Arts Night, and some Red Cross projects. Tailoring students attended small classes and concentrated more on laboratory experience than Clothing I pupils. Among required projects were dresses, pants, coats, and gowns. The ultimate goal for the tailoring class was drafting a home-made pattern. The course in Clothing I consisted of comprehensive sewing in addition to the actual labs. To increase their knowledge of textiles. students made trips toanearby mill 2 and to New York City. All girls who took either course were expected to participate inthe Annual Fashion Show on Practical Arts Night, either modeling a creation or working on other jobs such as publicity or advertising. The diversity in the courses offered allowed students to expand their creativity and enhance their skills in the art of sewing. 1 Studying a pattern is an involving task for Claire Brunelle. 2 Junior Colleen Garrity ap- pears hopeful as she puts final touches on her dress. 3 Details are the key to success for Joanne Pokigo. Phys Ed students choose from new seasonal electives Cathedral's physical education program adequately supplemented students academic education again this vear. A program of electives, which rotated seasonally, was successfully inaugurated. The students were free to choose from a variety of offerings. Possible selections in the boys program ranged from football and softball to weight training. Golf instruction was added to the curriculum this year, complementing the usual activities. The ever-expanding girls program offered for the first time tennis, track and field and when weather permitted, tobogganing. Highlighting the program were co-educational square dancing and volleyball. By instituting this program the Phys Ed department enabled the individual to pursue his athletic interests. r ee oat % eer” ono pO FO its 1 Contemplating their next move of team strate- gy, Robert McKenzie and Jimmy Joyce confer. 2°... and promenade your partner home.’ 3 Gym teacher Sr. Beverly Rochford provides in- structions in basic techniques of tennis. 4 Teamwork is everything! 5 Positioning himself to leap, spiker Tom Harrington prepares to rush the net. 6 With his teammates looking on, a fast- moving soph smashes the ball toward the opposition, Driver Education program regains success at Cathedral The driver education program reinstated at Cathedral 4 in the 71-'72 school year has, during its two years, found its place in the CHS curriculum. rhe program, under the direction of Mr. William Thomas, is offered during school time to all eligible CHS students on their study periods, and has proven itself successful to those seeking their license. The enrollment is at capacity with 225 students participating. The two year Graphic-Arts Course consisting of Basic Tech and Engineering Drawing proves invaluable to individuals planning a career related to art, fashion design, or interior decorating. The three-year Engineering course is specifically geared to give students amore thorough knowledge and to better prepare them for fields of study in advanced-level engineering and drawing. The three-year program includes Mechanical One and Two and Fundamentals of Engineering. The highlight of the year was the Arts Festival, held during the second week in May. This event provided an excellent diversion from usual class work and gave students an opportunity to express some of their more unusual talents. 1 Pausing from his drawing junior Keith Woods builds castles in the air. 2 Taking time out to inspect his work, Sean Doyle gives it a nod of approval. 3 Deeply involved in his work, Sean Abad carefully marks his place with his T- square. 4 All mechanical drawing skills come down to these basic tools of the trade. 49 NHS relief project benefits children Under the leadership of Debbie Carleton, its first woman president, the National Honor Society provided an opportunity for the entire student body to show their will to be involved. The Society collected non-prescription medicine, clothing and blankets for Vietnamese children and the underprivileged in Appalachia. The students responded in the true spirit of giving and many packages were sent. The smooth running of many school functions including College Night and Freshman Orientation was made possible by the cooperation of NHS members. Underclassmen were invited to the Society s induction ceremonies to provide an introduction for prospective members. 1 Leadership rings in the voice of Mary Lou Darsigny. 2 Preparing banners for induction required patience as exemplified by Lorna Clement. 3 Two year members of the Honor Society reflect qualities of character, scholar- ship, leadership and service. 4 Integrity of an NHS member is mirrored on the face of Don Cameron ‘Cathedral standouts exercise initiative, merit distinction i | | | | 1 | | SS 1 All-American soccer player Paul Stelzer. 2 Who's Who nominees Tom Savoy, Pat Garvey, Ed Koenig, Carol Rooke, Dolores Mei, Ed Fitz- gerald, and Debbie Carleton. 3 Betty Crocker Future Homemaker Award winner Steve Shee- han. 4 National speech contender Tracy Jen- | kins. 5 Recipients of letters of commendation: | Steve Sheehan, Bill Shewchuk, Al Joyce, John Krawiec, Ed Roy, Marc Boisvert, and finalist Mike Masuck. | 4 | Sl Practical Arts Night inspires interest Skills aquired through the school year were exhibited by the students on Practical Arts Night. Cooking classes featured an informative display of table settings and a colorful array of foods. The decorative cakes were given to lucky visitors in a special drawing. ‘Fashion for the Seasons was the theme for the fashion show in which each girl modeled her own creation. Exhibits from the mechanical drawing department included a wide range of designs, constructions, and models, with the theme “Form Follows Function.” The radio club gave instructions in the operation of ham radios and made several contacts. Under the leadership of President Tom LaRoche, the society broadened its understanding of flight through field trips to Bradley Airport and actual experience in the air. Insight consisted of twenty students who attempted to bring personal meaning to current events through intensive research. Their main project entailed a study topic to be researched by members and presented to the group. Twelve interested students gave of themselves 5 by donating their time in the interests of six youngsters from the Child Study Home on Sherman Street. Every Thursday from three o clock to four o clock, the children were taught CCD at Cathedral. Each child was in the care of two Cathedral students. After the lessons, which were presented in a relaxed atmosphere, students and children spent some time together just being themselves. or Clubs develop, expand with increased student interest Greater participation and individual modification of club procedures were found in clubs this year. Sparked with interest in the practices and techniques of the professional photographer, members of the Photography Club became familiar with new photographic skills through the use of a five week slide-tape series supplied by Eastman Kodak Company. Eager for results, the Radio Club set out to accomplish many tasks. Strong support of underclassmen combined with leadership and experience of senior co-presidents l z enabled the group to rebuild their transmitter for better broadcasting, and attain a wider range of reception through use of anew, more powerful antenna. The Art Club redefined its purpose this year, and donned the title of Art Workshop. The new program acquired a less formal atmosphere, and allowed students to work when they wished. It also encouraged those interested to continue any creative ideas beyond the classroom. Improvement was the main objective of the Riding club this year. Due to the tremendous turnout of underclassmen meetings were devoted primarily to the development of riding skills and sportsmanship. Members were able to mix business with pleasure as they developed horsemanship through horseback riding. 1 Adjusting his lens, Mike Graziano prepares to take some close-ups. 2 Pages of negatives are scanned by Bob Eckleman. 3 Tom Lavallee shapes his ideas into clay. 4 Grace and elegance characterize Chris Bergeron’s riding style. 5 Dreams are sketched by Donna Duquette. 6 A run down transmitter gets special care from Dave Cote. D iversified club activities spark enthusiastic response An interesting vear saw Cathedralites actively enrolled in extracurricular programs. By raising funds to finance their calendar of events, Red Cross members committed themselves to improve conditions of those not so fortunate. In the Sewing Club girls found an opportunity to make use of available sewing machines, and in doing so developed versatility in sewing, while creating a variety of fashion stvles. Chessmen vied with stiff competition this year, as the CHS Chess Team entered the Pioneer Valley Chess League. The team finished with a winning season as they clashed with surrounding schools. After school, members of the Spanish Club worked at the Spanish Apostolate every week. Each Tuesday, a group of members prepared a lesson in cooking and sewing, along with arts and crafts, for the children at the center. This provided members with an opportunity to become more actively involved in life outside school. The French Club, which met every month, emphasized self improvement 3 through the study of culture and civilization, not often explored in depth in the classroom. 1 Enchantment. 2 Carol Gaudreau takes second place to the photographer. 3 An interested viewer watches as Kathy Allen demonstrates how to make a puppet. 4 Watching carefully as Denise Bissonnette weaves a placemat, her young friend gets a few pointers. 1 Careful hands track down a distance problem. 2 Sister Marita Joseph gives a smile of approval as Roger Talbot arrives at a conclusion. 3 Con- templating the next step, Joanne Cavanaugh scans her work. Every week interested students enriched their mathematical knowledge through problems offered by the math club. Its purpose was to study in depth topics not included in regular class work but which required application of class knowledge. The math club consisted of 60 to 70 students who worked on and solved problems from Russian Olympiad math exams and National and State math prize exams. Upperclassmen were eligible for membership in Mu Alpha Theta, national honor society. The varsity mathlete team was selected from outstanding members of the club. Top scorer Ed Koenig was both captain of mathletes, and president of math club. Dan O Shea and Don Cameron were also regular varsity members. The tireless practice paid off when Cathedral placed second in mathlete competition. Speech team gains recognitionas successful year ends Desiring to improve their speaking ability and poise, many CHS students participated in this year s speech festival. In January, the annual Diocesan Speech Festival was held at Cathedral. Over two hundred students from nine schools engaged in this event. Members of the CHS speech team participated in several different categories ranging from Radio-Newscasting to Children’s Literature. Other categories included Dramatic Monologue, Original Oration, Prose, Oratorical Interpretation and Humorous Monologue. The afternoon was rounded off with Group Discussion and Extemporaneous Speaking. The CHS speech team won eighteen gold medals and six silver medals. Theater adopts new casting policy Cathedral High School theater productions took on a new perspective this year with the adoption of the policy of open casting. Throughout the season roles were not restricted to permanent members, and each presentation encouraged a variety of students to participate. Compositions varied from dramatic readings of Animal Farm to portrayals of selections from Shakespeare, which were presented to the student body on in-service days. ee F- -2) : s See Se SS 1 Letting their tragic roles envelop their beings, Kathy Moriarty and Timmy O’Brien contemplate their fates. 2 Lisa Neffinger listens intently to a fellow thespian. 3 “Once more, with feeling!’’ says Ann Marie Fitzgerald. 4 Why do Michael Jalbert, Peter Chase, Robert Derose and Robert Foley look so skeptical? 5 Last minute rehearsing finds Dave Desrosiers and Father Riendeau discussing a difficult pas- sage from“ Animal Farm” Pre-season practice improves performers march routines Intensive training in an atmosphere of fun made August 27 to September | a memorable experience for the forty-five members of the Color Guard and Drill Team. The first annual summer work camp took place at Mont Marie, Holyoke. A rigorous twelve-hour schedule included six hours of marching. Cooking, cleaning and relaxation filled the intervals between marching sessions. During training, two routines used at football halftimes were whipped into sharp military presentations. The Color Guard added two new flag-bearers and one gun-bearer, bringing the number to twelve, their highest ever. Work began in early Novemeber for the third annual Thanksgiving Day Special, “A Salute to Our Country.” This performance highlighted a very successful season for the marching units. An extended season provided a bridge for the gap between football games and parades. Home basketball games were brightened with precise movements of a special routine designed for use in the confines of the gym. bS 1 Performers move out in formation during summer training session. 2 Mike Parent con- centrates on a potential Panther touchdown. 3 It’s been a long hard day for sophomore Robin Glidden. 4 Mark time, march! 5 Participating in the Thanksgiving Day entertainment are Ron Cicerchia, Bill LaChappelle, Mike Pepper and Cathy Girard. 6 Suzanne Lane and Anne Marie Mulrooney awaiting the next command. 69 Musical Extravaganza features the language of dance The CHS band, majorettes, vocalists, and dancers presented for the second year, a Musical Extravaganza. The first part of the evening featured the language of dance. It was presented in four categories: classical, ethnic, broadway, and modern. Each group accepted responsibility for different issues published every two weeks. With the purchase of a headline machine, the staff produced everything to do with the paper except the actual printing. Junior members attended the AIC Press Conference to discuss the strong and weak points of newspapers, obtaining hints to improve the publication. Later in the year students participated in the Columbia University Press Conference for additional information on bettering high school reporting. Workshop sessions, practice matches benefit debaters This year s debating team was aided by the introduction of workshop sessions, in which team members criticized one another s facts, learned new debate techniques and exchanged pieces of information. After spending endless hours in practice debates, the Cathedral Debating Society opened its 72-73 season. They battled the National Debate topic with determination and wit. Resolved: That governmental financial support for all public, elementary, and secondary education in the United States should be provided exclusively by the federal government. All three debating squads, varsity, junior varsity, and novice, participated in various tournaments at U Mass, Barrington, R.L., and Cathedral, matching minds on this controversial topic. The season was highlighted by all three teams combining skills and effort to give Cathedral a fourth place rank out of eleven schools competing in the CHS tournament. 1 With confidence and optimism, Jerry Daniele reviews the National Debate topic. 2 Team moderator Sr. Lorraine Henry assists Lisa De- Sousa and Rita Duchesneau in preparation for the Barrington debate. 3 Varsity debater Dave Canarie forcefully presents his facts. 4 Team members Mark Stelzer and Sam Santa match wits on governmental finance issue. 5 In a workshop session Liz McCarthy patiently keeps time for her fellow debaters. Co-captains Jim Hough and Bill Wischerth teamed up with first-line mates Mike Fenton, Bill Ellis, and Marty Wright to overpower opponents. Wischerth and Wright made up what was considered to be the toughest defense in the Berry division. Hough was a leading scorer in his league and Wright led in points scored by a defenseman. This scoring punch with team defense accounted for the Panthers’ success. Glenn Ligenza : contended for the top spot in goaltending with a 1.14 average ‘ and had several shutouts. He had 37 saves in the crucial Classical game : which saw the stickmen 4 check the Bulldogs, 3-1. Both Hough and Ligenza were named player of-the-week by the Republican, with Glenn earning the honor on two successive weeks. Varsity newcomers Charley Landry and John Kenney combined with vets Joe Milbier, Paul Stelzer, and Joe Sibilia to form a formidable second line which took some pressure off the first. Stelzer and Milbier, along with Wischerth, Hough, and Ligenza who accumulated thirteen letters in their varsity careers, will be lost through graduation. For most of the season the starting backfield of Brian McKenna, Pat Healy, and Kevin McCarthy was out. Each of these players came back at midseason only to suffer reinjury. There were many more casualties, game after game. Coach Clyde Meyerhoefer, though disappointed that they didn’t come up with a better record, said the team played fairly well under the circumstances. He especially cited the seniors for dedication to the team and their desire to win, and labeled them as one of the best groups he’s ever worked with. A season-opening victory over cellar-dweller West Side brought hopes for a good season, but tough losses to Chicopee, Holyoke, and league champ Greenfield annihilated any title hopes. A well-played victory over Agawam lifted spirits, but was followed by a close loss to Comp. The highlight of the season followed when the gridsters played Tech. The squad gained revenge for last year s 46-0 loss with a hard-fought 14-0 triumph over the favored Tiger club. This was accomplished with seven offensive starters out of action. After posting an early 5-1 mark, the Panthers had a midseason slump and dropped to 6-5. To qualify for the tourney Coach Dan Balicki s men needed seven of their final nine contests. With this in mind the hardcourt men rolled off five straight victories, including wins over two of the league s powerhouses. Third-rated Pittsfield was first to fall at the hands of the fired-up Cathedral team, and the second big win was over undefeated Commerce, ranked first in Western Mass. A group of hard-working seniors, led by four-year guard Mike Julian, provided most of Balicki s manpower. Bob O Herron, Bill O'Grady, and Bob Hawley worked in the frontcourt, while sharp-shooting Bob Duquette played the second guard spot. Senior Tim Clark and Steve McKeever saw action at forward, while Bob Andrews and Ed Fitzgerald came up with fine efforts in their many stints at guard. Julian had his finest year, finishing among the top scorers, and was honored by selection to the All-Western Mass squad for the third time in a row. We came not as ourselves but as academic statistics. In whatever form we arrived the fact remains we came together as one. In the beginning the horizon looked foggy but the light of the distant daystar guided us through. The only thing that stood in our way was the vastness of a new world which was set before us. As the fog lifted we began to look beyond the shadow of being, undivided by numbers, and found that behind those classifications stood real people with real feelings. Together we shared the joy of winning, the smiles of laughter and the sorrow of disappointments. However, we began to realize that happiness washes away yesterday s tears and the warmth we find in each other no machine can ever take away. The warmth lies in that one smile Which will live on unforgotten in the memory of existence The key to understanding remains in the awareness of the world revolving around us. Only we can decide that which is right and that which is an illusion. Thus, A dream made real for a you ora me . with you I leave infinity ... hes 2 ees. 4 od ie fb ee a a rk Albano : ( AL.
