Science Department undergoes distinctive changes ™ Major innovations in the Science Department demonstrate that education is an ever-changing process. Freshmen reaped most of the benefits. Their curriculum was expanded by adding two classes of Interaction of Matter and Energy, a lab-oriented inquiry course, to the already-established Introductory Physical Science. The AP Biology class assembled independent study projects consisting of papers, films, and tapes for the use of underclassmen. Team teaching was used with Soph Biology classes which met in the auditorium for large group instruction, followed on subsequent days by independent study, labs, and medium group review. The department conducted an experiment with Junior Chemistry classes, using a programmed text for one, while the control group followed a standard text. At the end of the year both classes took a standarized test to determine which method would be better for the future. Senior Physics students taught by Sr. Kathleen Frank contracted for their marks, deciding the grade they would achieve, and then completing a designated amount and quality of work. For the benefit of all, a science resource center made available books, pamphlets, and audio-visual materials. 79
