Boy swimmers down competition; — Girls still on slow upward climb Powerful strokes and thrusting kicks propelled the boys’ swim team to a 14-2 season. Mastery of the Australian crawl, butterfly, back and breast strokes was proven through team performance, as well as in individual sprints and relays. Demonstrating their aquatic skills the team downed ten school records. Seven swimmers splashed into the state meet, comprising the largest state squad in Cathedral’s swimming history. The mermen took first place in division ““C”’ enabling them to move up to the ‘‘B” division next season. The year saw the revival of girls’ swimming at CHS, a successful year through not a winning one. This year’s team was the first to compete in dual meets and the Western Mass Championship. Benefits were derived from the experience received in actual competition against already established area teams. Baseball nine captures ’71 Western Mass crown The Cathedral baseball team powered its way to glory in Western Mass, ending Tech's three year reign as regional champs. A strong team in ’71, the Panthers scored more runs than any other city rival, led Western Mass teams in hitting, and finished with an 18-3 record. Cathedral's speed and aggressiveness earned them the most stolen bases in Western Mass. Phil Suse contributed to the effort with 22 steals in season play. MVP Bill Mogée pitched eight wins losing only once. Climaxing the season, Cathedral met Holyoke for the Western Mass Championship. Down 5-0, Cathedral rallied for nine runs in late innings to win.
