In the ‘71 season Cathedral’s varsity golf squad outplayed all other city teams with an 11-6-2 record. This enabled the squad to compete in Western Mass team competition. In Western Mass individual tournament play, Jim Torrenzano and Bill Warfield tied for second place. Tom White placed fourth. CHS further distinguished itself by being the only team in Western Mass to place three men in the Schoolboy State individual tournament at Saddle Hill golf course. Bill Warfield fired a 72 in the first round and followed with an 84 in the second, placing seventh out of a field of 90. Coach Dimitroff looks forward to an even more successful season with four of the six varsity players returning. TEA

Panthers serve undefeated record in ‘71 city play Winding up the year undefeated in city matches, the 1971 tennis team extended its four-year reign as city champs. Captain John Callaghan, a’71 graduate, led the team to an overall 20-4 record. They placed third in Western Mass, after a disappointing 2-3 Holyoke loss. In the Western Mass Singles, John captured the sixth spot, with Mike Williams seeded eighth. In Western Mass doubles play, John’s brother Jim, and Joe Mayotte fought their way to the finals only to lose along, tiresome match to a pair of Longmeadow racketeers. Boy swimmers down competition; — Girls still on slow upward climb Powerful strokes and thrusting kicks propelled the boys’ swim team to a 14-2 season. Mastery of the Australian crawl, butterfly, back and breast strokes was proven through team performance, as well as in individual sprints and relays. Demonstrating their aquatic skills the team downed ten school records. Seven swimmers splashed into the state meet, comprising the largest state squad in Cathedral’s swimming history. The mermen took first place in division ““C”’ enabling them to move up to the ‘‘B” division next season. The year saw the revival of girls’ swimming at CHS, a successful year through not a winning one. This year’s team was the first to compete in dual meets and the Western Mass Championship. Benefits were derived from the experience received in actual competition against already established area teams.
