Cathedral grapplers vie for repeat championship Returning wrestlers found themselves in the unenviable position of matching last year’s championship performance. The 1972 Panther grapplers altered their style and replaced personnel without affecting their winning ways. Both the light and middleweight wrestlers were unbeatable. The quickness and experience lost in the heavyweight category through graduation was compensated for by Mike Hyder’s and Brian Burke’s superb efforts at every meet. The highlight of the season took place when Cathedral met unbeaten Tech on Panther mats. Ed Sunter, Mike Williams, and Ed Nugent were instrumental in building an unexpected early lead. Tech came charging back until the whole meet hinged on the final match between Mike Hyder and his Tech opponent. Hyder lost a decision which resulted in a draw at 23. This set the stage for the Western Mass championship. Both teams were unbeaten, both were previous champions, and both longed to repeat. 68 2 1 Ace heavyweight Mike Hyder comes closer to pinning his foe. 2 Turning his opponent on his back, Al Joyce strives for victory. 3 Patiently awaiting his turn to wrestle, Tom Hill watches the action at hand.

TA De New ‘stadium’ draws Frosh fans 1 During a rough workout, tired Ray Bennett listens to instructions. 2 Sidestepping tacklers, John Santaniello scampers for extra yardage. 3 Strong running back John Santaniello is dragged down after a good gain. 4 Near the end of a tough game, an exhausted lineman takes a breather. For the first time in its history, the CHS Frosh Football team drew strong support from fans. Many of the games were played in Cathedral's new ‘‘stadium”’ behind the school. Cheerleaders aroused spirit for the team which in earlier years, no one even knew existed. Rookie coach Charles Casserly initiated a new policy by which no one was cut from the squad. Of the 70 boys who tried out for the team, 50 remained, while the others dropped on their own decision. A new award, the “’ purple tie,” was presented to the best player of any given week. It gained distinction and became somewhat of a tradition for the freshman class, becoming so popular that class advisers invented the ‘purple sock award”’ for outstanding soccer players, and the ‘purple glove’ for members of the frosh basketball squad. 69
