Bolstered by the return of seasoned veterans the Cathedral pucksters enjoyed a most stirring season. The Panthers were a surprise in the Berry Divison, giving Classical a fight down to the wire and finally finishing a close second. Rookie coach Tony Odierna was far from disappointed with his team’s strong showing. Offensively, they were better balanced than in previous seasons. The development of Kevin O’Connor into a hustling center with Pat Moriarty on his wing greatly strengthened the squad’s scoring punch. As a result, some of the burden of scoring was removed from the stick of Tom Tabb. Defenseman Dan O'Malley, an underrated hockey player according to Coach Odierna, and netminder Dave McGlynn anchored a tenacious defense whose strength showed distinctly in the shutout of Chicopee and Tech, and even more so in the startling Western Mass championship shutout against the Bulldogs of Classical. The surprising upset, which dethroned the three-year Classical champs, highlighted past-season play, since it was immediately followed by a disappointing loss to Central Mass champions St. John’s of Shrewsbury, and this shattered hopes of a shot at the state crown. 60
