Harriers first in Western Mass to hold state title The season of 1971 marked the first time across country team from Western Mass gained superiority over the remainder of the state. The Panthers achieved this task in most convincing fashion with an effort that produced a 23-point gap between them and runner-up A pponnequet High. The dedication and skill with which Paul Whitlock coached his charges spurred them through the fall schedule during which they extended their four-year unbeaten string to 58 meets. Rich Bourie, Cathedral’s premiere runner smashed seven course records, one standing for 33 years, and proved himself second to none in New England with an individual victory at the New England Championship in New Hampshire. Co-captain Pat Moriarty, along with seniors Tom Biggins and Jim O’Connor, provided able support for Bourie’s record pace by consistently beating the oppositions’ top runners making possible the team championship. Coach Paul Whitlock said before the State meet, ‘Because of our losses next year through graduation, this is our year to go all the way.” 46

Cathedral’s young soccer squad nabs league title; Bows from tournament with bizarre, disputed loss For the third time in five years the Cathedral booters captured the Interschool League soccer crown, the symbol of soccer superiority among the five city high schools. Although the majority of the squad was juniors, the team showed exceptional poise throughout the season according to Coach Lee Kenworthy. Forwards Paul Stelzer and Steve Lortie provided most of the offenseive punch, backed by a defense anchored by Chris Lynch and Ken McLoed. The city title was handily won by the Panthers who took seven out of eight contests, including the title clincher against Classical. Steve Lortie’s two goals provided the winning margin in a 3-1 verdict over Longmeadow in the opening round of Western Mass competition. In Monson, against Leominster in the quarter-finals, Cathedral experienced one of its most frustrating games, after four overtime periods the score stood 0-0. Cathedral enjoyed a wide shots-on-goal edge over their opposition but were at a 7-5 disadvantage in corner kicks, which is the determining factor in tie games. Chris Lynch, Jim Berg, and Steve Lortie were recognized for their performances by being named to both all-city and second Western Mass teams.
