1 As one of the fringe benefits of running the projector, film club members Chris Lavoie and Tom Laroche enjoy a free film on a Thursday afternoon. 2 Insight members Mike Romani and Tom Daly, interested in prison reform, get a first-hand glimpse at the inside workings of the Springfield Police Department. 3 Anti-Com- munist League moderator, Sr. Eileen Ryan, and Mary Lise Rheault, stop in front of the Capitol on the historical tour sponsored by Freedoms Foundation. 4 Absorption and contentment light the faces of Jan Lasonde and her young guest at the DRAG Christmas party. 5 Hesitating for a moment, Dave Walsh “’ pawn- ders’”’ his next move. 6 Chef club members John Skiba and Ken Demers serve their contribution to the DRAG Christmas party. 34

at 3 1 Bacteriology reseacher, Allan Lavoie, inserts a probe into his culture medium. 2 Intent on the construction of the club’s scale-sized airplane, Aeronautics president, Mark Alarie, finishes shellacking the fuselage. 3 Observing the prog- ress of their drosophila fly experiment, Sue Czochara and Bill Salamenta look for character- istic genetic traits. 4 Aeronautical locations are designated by the concise map studying of Jim Kelly and Lori Berube. After acomplete restructuring, the nearly-defunct Cathedral Aeronautical Society was revived this year to an active group supported by enthusiastic underclass response. Headed by Mark Alarie and Irene Lesko, they flew about once a month from Bowles Airport in Agawam. The club took trips to Bradley Field and Barnes Airport. Mark Alarie and Tom Laroche taught flight-basics and navigation to underclass members. The Future Scientists of America, moderated by Sr. Richard Francis, changed its study to an extensive examination of environmental conditions. Bill Salamenta, president, and Bill Lonergan, vice-president, initiated a new system where students researched independently to supplement group activities. Dr. Brian White of Smith College spoke to the club on “Conservation through Geology.”’ FSA was composed of eight groups, each unique. Their topics ranged from Bacteriology to Astronomy. They included a behavioral branch which examined the changes a student undergoes in advancing from freshman to senior year. Ss

Various clubs meet wide range of student concern Wide interests sparked etia? 7 ‘ the activities of Cathedral’s clubs. Once a week members of DRAG spread the ideals of Christianity to emotionally disturbed children. The all-male chef club trained its members to be artists of the kitchen. Chess club more than doubled its size, perhaps due to the increase in the popularity of the game after the extensive publicity of champion Bobby Fisher. Insight, aclub active in social affairs, took a trip to the Springfield Police Department as part of their study of prison reform. They invited a speaker almost every week to address the interested students who attended their open meeting. 35
