7 Language clubs vary activities “a : : ' : i : ES : ‘ i : : : % ; a Se Students found language clubs helpful in applying their language skills. German club members gained an understanding of German culture through their trips to Boston, New York, and the Fort Restaurant. Guest speakers added variety. Members of the French club studied Frenchmen of today through such French greats as DeGaulle and Chevalier. Spanish club members donated time to work at the Spanish Apostolate. They held art, cooking, and sewing classes twice a week for the interested Spanish-speaking students of Sacred Heart and Armory Street schools. 1 Anticipating the Christmas celebration for Spanish-speaking children, Debbie Roberts and Harriet Walsh construct a pinata. 2 In any lan- guage, a bug’s a bug. 3 Spanish youngsters ea- gerly await the breaking of the pifata. 4 French Club members Deborah Regnier and Grace Nardi flip through a French periodical with Sr. Teresa Derouin.

After acomplete restructuring, the nearly-defunct Cathedral Aeronautical Society was revived this year to an active group supported by enthusiastic underclass response. Headed by Mark Alarie and Irene Lesko, they flew about once a month from Bowles Airport in Agawam. The club took trips to Bradley Field and Barnes Airport. Mark Alarie and Tom Laroche taught flight-basics and navigation to underclass members. The Future Scientists of America, moderated by Sr. Richard Francis, changed its study to an extensive examination of environmental conditions. Bill Salamenta, president, and Bill Lonergan, vice-president, initiated a new system where students researched independently to supplement group activities. Dr. Brian White of Smith College spoke to the club on “Conservation through Geology.”’ FSA was composed of eight groups, each unique. Their topics ranged from Bacteriology to Astronomy. They included a behavioral branch which examined the changes a student undergoes in advancing from freshman to senior year. Ss
