Enthusiastic students follow interests through clubs CHS clubs offered a variety of interests for students. Speakers and field trips compounded the activities of the Better Business Club, while members of the Riding Club spent most of the year forming a Cathedral Mounted Drill Team, the first in Western Mass. Supplying artistic talent, the Art Service Club helped make scenery, programs, and posters whenever called upon. Red Cross was geared toward the service of others; thus they devoted their time to one project a month. Among these were making and stuffing stockings for Monson State Hospital, in addition to designing and sending valentines to the Mont Marie Infirmary. Applying the principles of amateur broadcasting, CHS Radio Club station K, UHA contacted Europe, Africa, and some US ships at sea. The Scuba Diving Club contributed to Ecology Week by cleaning Island Pond, while the girls in FTA served as teachers aides by correcting tests and designing bulletin boards. During the monthly meetings the Photography Club discussed such various subjects as focusing, types of lenses, camera models, and quality and developing of pictures. They trained to become photographers for the Chronicle or Pantherpix. 28

Debaters match wits in battles on judicial reforms Resolved: That the Jury System of the U.S. should be significantly changed. This was the National Debate topic for the ‘71-72 school year. After hours of endless research Cathedral's debate teams were ready for their various meets. Unknown to many, the debate team consisted of three squads; varsity, intermediate and novice. The varsity team had its ups and downs, with the novice and intermediate teams doing somewhat better. The highlight of the season for novice debaters, was winning a trophy in the University of New Hampshire's 55th Novice Invitational Tournament. Although debating does not have the crowd appeal of varsity sports, the members in the battle of wits share just as much pride and desire. 1 Club officers, Sheila Kraus and Oliver Mitch- ell, prepare for their first debate of the season. 2 Moderator Sr. Lorraine Henry confers with in- termediate debaters on strategy. 3 Early in the debating year, Liz Thiebe and Gary Allard scan rules of procedure.
