Six excel on National Merit test Semi-finalists status in the National Merit Scholarship Program was awarded to six seniors. Representing Cathedral were Amy Geoffroy, Marianne Laroche, John McBride, Debra Motto, Catherine Pooler, and Robert Stowe, the highest scorers in the school. About 96 percent of all semi-finalists were expected to become finalists, making them eligible for one of the 1000 state-granted National Merit $1000 Scholarships. Semi-finalists advance to finalist status after a review of their academic ability, achievements, and outside interests. 1 “The Farmer in the Dell’ provides an amus- ing afternoon's entertainment for Maurice Cah- illane and his young friend Eddie. 2 Linked hands and smiling faces make it easy for Marie Jablonski to find a new friend. 3 Simon says, “Put your hands on your cheeks.’ A basic desire to make the Aquinas Chapter of the National Honor Society more relevant to today’s students was seen in the group’s plans. This attitude resulted from informal discussions of the society's purpose, late last year. As usual, emphasis was placed on service, but extended outside of Cathedral’s immediate interests. Several community projects were submitted for consideration by NHS members and its moderator, Sr. Rose Carmel. Among these were a Christmas toy collection, a children’s paperback book drive, and service to the blind, before which volunteers went through a short training period. Also, tutoring in the Northern Educational System, which has been on the NHS planning board for several years, finally left this preliminary stage and became a reality. For NES youngsters it proved to be an invaluable experience. Through this program, NHS members experienced a NHS members befriend youths personal encounter with young people outside of their normal daily scope, intensifying their grasp of the ideals of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. 95
