Panthers come home thinking they won it (reprinted from Springfield Daily News) Defending WMass Class L champion Cathedral ran out of miracles Monday night. For many, the end was hard to believe. “l’m going home thinking we won,” said Panther coach Dan Balicki. But it was Holyoke, top seeded, which advanced to semifinal action against Drury Thursday night at the Pittsfield Boys’ Club. Senior forward Mike Dean brought Holyoke a 65-63 win, reversing the expected chain of events in the final seconds. With four seconds to play Cathedral seemed on the verge of climaxing a pulsating comeback as co-captain Bill Moge stood at center court looking for backcourt mate Mike Julian on a throw-in. But the play never materialized, and, pressed, Moge tried a lob into the backcourt for Jim Whalen — but Dean tipped it, gravved it, and raced for the basket, laying in the winning points with two seconds left. Though Dean’s steal was a brilliant defensive move, many fans felt that he was guilty of traveling. During an ensuing timeout, Balicki and the Cathedral players protested futilely. With two seconds left, Cathedral attempted a desperation full-court pass, but Holyoke’s Bob Tully grabbed it to end the game. It seemed that Cathedral, which had beaten Hoosac in overtime a week before to reach the quarterfinals — then withstood three days of uncertainty involving player ineligibility — could pull out another one. : But Holyoke avenged an 81-67 quarterfinal loss to the Panthers last year, winning its 14th straight. Cathedral, ending a five-game win streak, | finished 12-9.
