arrowly misses Western Mass. competition in playoffs ND cer cacmateile aa With hopes aimed at a W.Mass. berth, the footmen scored a resounding victory over Enfield. But injuries thwarted the early season team efforts, as both co-captains Butch Friese and Tom Goodman, along with Brian Sullivan, were sidelined. Hopes dwindled as the Panthers concluded the first round with a 1-3 record. The tie against Amherst College Freshmen revived their spirits, only to be set back again by Commerce. Coach Kenworthy’s boys proved that they were not dead with a powerful triumph over Tech. Spirit ran high when Cathedral met Classical in a do-or-die game. Down 1-0, Cathedral fought back for an amazing 2-1 victory. It was Tom Goodman’s clutch penalty kick and Dave Brzezowski’s goal with thirty-four seconds remaining, that nailed down the victory. Hopes for a W.Mass. berth were boosted when the team entered playoffs with Commerce and Tech. But the strain of three games in four days took its toll. The W.Mass. spot slipped out of the Panthers’ grasp as they suffered defeat at the hands of Tech. Post-season honors went to Tom Goodman, who placed on the All — W. Mass. team. Forward slots on the All — Interschool team went to Butch Friese and Tom Goodman. 45
