,l W .4 X it ll l it , Dear Graduates: Most of you came to Cathedral High four years ago with the good qualities and the defects of typical freshmen. Now, at graduation, you leave, again typically strong and Weak. All of you have succeeded and all of you are failures, depending on the point of view. No one of you is a perfect graduate, no one of you has fallen completely short of the mark. Wlxen you came as typical freshmen, you were eager, enthusiastic, somewhat simple, wholehearted, immature. You were ready to receive and also ready to give. As you pro- gressed through school and lost some of your eagerness and simplicity, you were less ready to give and oftentimes less ready to receive. Conversely, the giving that you offered was more mature, and the receiving that you accepted was more thoughtful. And this process, too, was organic and typical. How well you have succeeded in high school or how short you have fallen is the measure of the present worth of your education. But over and above its present worth, your schooling at Cathedral should prove of inestimable value throughout the long haul which is life. For here at Cathedral you have received a good, solid education. You have lived in an atmosphere of mutual respect and Christian joy. You have been supported in your weaknesses and encouraged in your strengths. Above all, you have never been left in doubt, both by word and by example, as to the principles which should govern your life as a follower of Christ. When these principles become fully and maturely operative, then you will know the real value of your years here at Cathedral, Looking back on your education, you may have reached one important conclusion, namely, that insofar as you received gratefully from others and gave unselfishly of your- Self you have attained fulfillment. It is true that your vision is still limited and your interests, for the most part, self-centered. However, it is also true that you have been well-grounded in response to duty, in attitudes of tolerance and compassion, and in a sense of your dignity as a son of Christ's Mother. My wish for you at graduation is that every year may find you more maturely and more serenely a grateful and unselfish son in Mary's family. Sincerely in j.M.j., Brother Francis Haug, S.M. Principal
