X A MESSAGE iv BROTHER FRANCIS HAUG, S.M. Dear Graduates: At the end of high school, perhaps more than at any other time, surely for the maiority of graduates, an individual is faced with a number of important commitments. While some have made these commitments already and others will postpone them for a while, most will commit themselves in the normal process of everyday living to a rather set and inflexible system of values. We designate these commitments as character and describe a man as industrious or pure or honest or religious. From your first day at Cathedral, the ultimate aim of the faculty has been to ready you for the commitments to life that each man must make. This aim explains much of what you students would refer to as the good things of school life, as well as some of the rough things. The test of the intellectual worth of a school is whether the students graduate with cultivated intellectsy the test of the moral worth of a school is whether the students become religious men. The ideal school will integrate these two worths, as we attempt to do at Cathedral. Through long weeks and months we have tried to discipline your intellectsp we have provided curricula and methods designed to develop your mental powers. But, more important, for four years, we have planned everything about school life-our activities, our guidance, our friendly student-teacher relations, in short, our living together-to bring each of you to the threshold of ultimate commitments, the commitment to truth, the com- mitment to your fellow man, the commitment ta your God. And we have done all of this under the inspiration of one motto: Through the Mother to the Son. You go into a world that is not a family, a world that needs a Mother in order to find the Son. We feel confident that in the commitments you arrive ot, you will bring your Marian sonship to bear upon a world desperate for the kind of youths we think you are. Sincerely in the Virgin, Brother Francis Haug, S.M. Principal
