HIS EXCELLENCY... Most Reverend Henry Althoff, Bishop of Belleville The Cathedral High Seh(x l graduates of 1944 salute His Excellency, Most Rev¬ erend Bishop Henry Althoff, our spiritual leader, to whom the senior class owes much. From his hand have come many and various benefits. He has provided facilities to aid our spiritual as well as temporal education. His interest in the welfare of the Cathedral High School students has been ever felt by all concerned. Together with our president, Monsignor Joseph Mueller, and the Brothers of Mary, we, the ‘44 seniors, have received the utmost in Catholic High School education. He has constantly endeavored to promote all activities beneficial to the students, and has provided for any new addition to the school which would help the students in any way. So once again we salute His Excellency and sincerely thank him from the bottom of our hearts; though we cannot ably express our sentiments in words, we feel them in our hearts, and wish Bishop Althoff many more years of his able cooperation with his students toward their Catholic education. » THOMAS BIGHAUS ANTHONY ZAGARSKI RUE McNAY DEDICATION As the time comes for the class of “44 to receive their diplomas we feel the absence of three members, an absence more acute with the gathering of old memories. The pictures of Rue McNay, Tony Zagarski and Tom Bighaus do not appear among those of the graduates, yet they have a right to be there. To those three, who through Providence are unable to take their place with us, we dedicate this, our Senior Annual. Tom and Tony met their deaths swimming on a class picnic, one year later Rue too, was drowned. Tom and Tony were our religious leaders as well as being leaders in their respective studies. Rue was outstanding both in the classroom and the athletic field. They went as men should go, not recklessly, but engaged in the development of their growing bodies. They were athletes with us, they were scholars with us, they were growing to be men with us. It is only fitting therefore, that we remember them with this small dedication. May our Blessed Mother remember them and seek their eternal Salvation, as they died in the beautiful month dedicated to her, the month of May. Page Three

We now leave the halls of learning at Cathedral High, stepping out into a new life - into horizons unknown and unlim¬ ited. The Cathedral graduates, 1944, are soon to participate in the enormous task of liberating and reconstructing the war- torn world. It has ever been the aim of the men be¬ hind Cathedral to build men of sound mind, body, and character. Our President, Monsignor Joseph M. Mueller, has left no doubt in our minds if his success in this category. From our first day at Cathedral, he has striven to provide every facility toward the betterment of our education. So we, the graduates of 1944 extend to our President, Monsignor Mueller, our most sincere thanks for the utmost in co¬ operation toward our ultimate end fighting Crusaders — working Americans fighting and working to make the world a better place in which to live, and prepar¬ ing for our one goal -our eventual union with our Maker. Right Reverend Monsignor Joseph M Mueller After our first year at Cathedral High under the direction of Brother Wilfrid Moran, Brother Urban Fleege, S.M., Ph. D., returned to Cathedral High to assume duties as principal. Strict discipline prevailed at Cathedral under Brother Urban’s tenure, in his effort to train Cathedral High students to the ut¬ most in every trait, to build future Ameri¬ can ciizens of sound mind and character. Then, in December, 1941, came the grim menace of war, so Brother Urban immedi¬ ately set about to install courses and other facilities which would be as beneficial as possible to the future service men of Ca¬ thedral — those valiant men who were to safeguard the future of their country. And now, in one of the major steps of life, graduating from high school into ho¬ rizons unlimited and unknown, we, the seniors of ' 44, realize that Brother UThan Fleege, was eventually to fulfill his mission — that of making Cathedral High an edu¬ cational organization governed by men, for men!
