Under the direction of Brother Michael Brangan, S.M., the Journalism class, headed by four Seniors, has again presented the students with a pleasing publication. The title of “The Crusader was again used as the banner head, due to the fact that all our athletic teams and other forms of outside school representation perform under this inspiring caption. This year ' s staff was headed by Richard Smith and John Fellner, serving in the capacity of Co-Editors. The position of Sports Editor was held by John Flach, while William Wuller was Feature Editor. Under their direction served the rest of the staff, composed of Juniors and several Sophomores. The number of publications was increased from the six issues of former years to eight for this year. Nine issues were contemplated, but due to a lack of financial backing, only eight issues were able to be completed. It is doubtful if this year ' s policy will be continued in the future, for it was found that putting out eight issues placed the staff under considerable strain, especially in meeting its “deadlines for publication. The final issue of the “Crusader , published Friday, May 26, was edited solely by the Juniors and Sophomores of the Journalism class. It was supervised by Robert Bogner and Robert Spehn, first page editors; Vincent Mueller, second page; Estil Throckmorton, sports editor; and James Braun, fourth page. Joseph Glauber assumed the duties of circulation manager, with its corresponding responsibilities. Among these Juniors has been found a variety of talent, thus insuring the continuance of the ‘ ' Crusader next year. Page Eighteen

Cathedral again held the annual Oratory and Elocution Contests in the Cathedral High auditorium, before one of the periodical Mothers ' Club meetings. Edward Hotz, 44, and Harold Lorenz, ' 45, represented the Juniors and Seniors in the Oratory Contest. Hotz, having the topic of General Mark Wayne Clark , emerged as the victor. The trophy presented to the winners was sponsored by the Most Reverend Bishop Althoff. Walter Zahn, ' 47, won out over a group of six Freshmen and Sophomore finalists in the Elocution Contest. The Spieler Sells Shoes was the selection rendered by Zahn. Other finalists were Walter Nesbit, last year ' s winner, who presented Mark Anthony ' s Funeral Oration ; Arthur Lucash. presenting Spartaeus to the Gladiators ; Bernard Lorenz and his selection, The Treasures of the Church ; James Renner, who spoke on A Bid for the Tourist Trade ; and Robert Kosar, with his selection, The Dentist Chair Philosopher . MOTHERS’ CLUB Pictured above are the officers, for the past year, of the Cathedral High School Mothers’ Club. Reading from left to right: Mrs. J. Herold, secretary; Mrs. J. Yoellinger, vice-president; Mrs. E. Bogner, treasurer. Standing is, Mrs. R. Nebgen, president for the past two years. The graduating class of 1944 wish to take this, our last opportunity, to thank the Mothers ' Club of Cathedral High School for all of the many benefits we have received from them in our four years at Cathedral. This group of gallant women has steadfastly stood by us, fought for us, and striven in every way to render service to the school in all of its undertakings. In some of the projects undertaken, the Mothers ' Club received little cooperation or encourage ment at first, but, undaunted, they seruggled onward until they had achieved their ultimate goal. The going has not always been easy, but, somehow, they have always managed to come out on top. They have sponsored many activities in their untiring efforts to finance various projects around the school. We can appreciate their work all the more when we stop to realize that they, themselves, gain no personal benefits from their labors. They have donated their time, effort, and sometimes financial back ing, all for the good of the school and the students. One of the main events of the year was the Annual Father Son Banquet, held on the night of November 14. in the CHS. auditorium. This affair was again a huge success, being thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Other highlights of this year ' s pro gram included the Dad ' s Night, held on January 11, the Christmas Party, at which time gifts were distributed; the White Elephant Party, held on Thursday, February 10, and the talk given by an East St. Louis juvenile delinquency officer, concerning the present problems of our youth in America. This has been the Mothers ' Club ' s fifth successful year and it has distinguished itself as one of the most active organizations of the school. Next year ' s club will be under the able guidance of Mrs. Clem Gass, President; Mrs. Erwin Bogner; Vice President; Mrs. Winifrid Reime, Secretary; Mrs. George Renner, Treasurer. We, the Seniors, as well as the rest of the students, wish them every success at tainable in their future programs and sincerely hope that they will receive the whole¬ hearted cooperation given this year ' s President, Mrs. R. Nebgen, and her fellow officers. Page Nineteen
