DEDiCHTIOU his year, from May 15. 1980 co May 1% 1981 we celebrate the three hundredth anniversary of the institute of the Broth - ers of the Christian Schools. The Brothers have endured the test of time because of dedication, a sense of purpose and the spirit of love. These characteristics have served as a foundation ot the philosophy cstabhshed by St. John Baptist De La Salic, founder ot the Brothers of tlie christian schools. The spirit of La Salle continues to live in the christian schools and Cathedral Hii h School. La Salle s philosophy was based on four virtues to he taken by the Brothers: humility, patience, submission, and love of povetty. These virtues were the tools which La Salle used to dedicate himself to the poor. This dedication to the poor brought him to his life ' s goal: to enrich the moral and mtellectual character of the poor. By providing a good education and exemplifying the virtues of Christ. St. La Salle and, today the Brothers, achieve these goals. St. La Salle ' s ideals were that of a great humanitarian, but his efforts of self-sacrifice made him more than that. The degree of self-sacrifice is immeasurable when one recognizes the society he lived in. This was the french society of the late l UO ' s which was dominated by the aristocratic class, nonetheless. La Salle believed that the poor deserved a better life and eternal happi- ness. The spirit of love, born out La Salle ' s concern for the poot and his efforts to help them is now present all over the world. This spirit has continuously flourshed over three centuries, and the students of Cathedral have been witnesses to this kind of spirit for over fifty years. We dedicate the 1980 Chimes yearbook to St. La Salle and to all the Brothers of the Christian schools around the world, but most especially we dedicate the 1980 Chimes to those Brothers who have brought the spirit of love to Cathedral flii;h School U r the j,sf fifty five years.
