I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff for its outstanding contributions to the book. I would especially like to thank Bro. Donald our yearbook moderator. Special thanks go to all the Brothers, faculty, and students who cooperated with us. I would also like to thank all those who sponsored us and contributed to the production of the 1980 Cathedral Chimes. I don ' t think the student body realizes the long hours and hard work that went into putting this yearbook together but we hope that you appreciate and take pride in this yearbook. This year we tried to cover the events of 1979-80 and the life of our school as accurately, honestly, and completely as possible. We hope this was done in a way that is informative, memorable, interesting and en tiyable to our readers. We tried not to show any favoritism for any individual or activ- ity. We tried to increase the amount of copy to fulfill the yearbook ' s respon- sibility as a reference book tor later use. Sincerely. The Brothers have endured the test of time because of dedication, a sense of purpose and the spirit of love. These characteristics have served as a foundation ot the philosophy cstabhshed by St. John Baptist De La Salic, founder ot the Brothers of tlie christian schools. The spirit of La Salle continues to live in the christian schools and Cathedral Hii h School. La Salle s philosophy was based on four virtues to he taken by the Brothers: humility, patience, submission, and love of povetty. These virtues were the tools which La Salle used to dedicate himself to the poor. This dedication to the poor brought him to his life ' s goal: to enrich the moral and mtellectual character of the poor. By providing a good education and exemplifying the virtues of Christ. St. La Salle and, today the Brothers, achieve these goals. St. La Salle ' s ideals were that of a great humanitarian, but his efforts of self-sacrifice made him more than that. The degree of self-sacrifice is immeasurable when one recognizes the society he lived in. This was the french society of the late l UO ' s which was dominated by the aristocratic class, nonetheless. La Salle believed that the poor deserved a better life and eternal happi- ness. The spirit of love, born out La Salle ' s concern for the poot and his efforts to help them is now present all over the world. This spirit has continuously flourshed over three centuries, and the students of Cathedral have been witnesses to this kind of spirit for over fifty years. We dedicate the 1980 Chimes yearbook to St. La Salle and to all the Brothers of the Christian schools around the world, but most especially we dedicate the 1980 Chimes to those Brothers who have brought the spirit of love to Cathedral flii;h School U r the j,sf fifty five years. ' ' This dedication could be a very long one but we shall only say that we have one word that will express our gratitude: Admiration . Now the fruits of his efforts are producing results. We see these not only in the buildings or in the dedication of the Brothers but also in ourselves. The question that remains is whether we shall be able to keep this spirit alive and transmit it. too. Our answer comes without hesitation: Yes! . Therefore, for all these reasons. Brothers and Brother La Salle, step forward and receive this dedication. Seniors, this was our last year at Cathedral and a time for deep thought about our goals for the future. The following few words are appropriate and could give you needed encouragement. Cathedral wishes you the best of luck and hopes to see you return someday as fulfilled men. These Seniors have had four years of fighting with books and who knows what else! Their courses were intended to complete them as persons, and to help them find the meaning of life, not jusr fill them with words. Cathedral has one of ' the best curriculums in all California. I ' his is the reason for all that homework! Hey.- T ' reshmen and all of you! u did not know that.- ' Now you do. so let us try to do better. Activities.- ' These Seniors will remember the things they helped to organize and the dances they attended. This Senior class sponsored various activities throughout the year. This should serve as an encouragement to all classes to enrich all aspects of their lives now and in the future. Sports! source of growth for body and spirit. The Seniors who partici- pated in sports discovered the deeper meaning of team participation and team unity while not losing sight of their individual growth. The lesson is obvious and can be applied to all of life: the strength of the ream depends on the effort put in by each individual. When one thinks about all of the .sports and other activities at Cathedral one has also to think about .ill the organi atu ns which gi e added life to those various activities. Hopefully with the coming generations the organi- zations will grow even more, not only in numbers but in opportunities for self-expression from the student body. In closing therefore, let us dedicate ourselves to the improvement and perfection of our minds, bodies and souls in the spirit of the St. John Baptist de La Salle as passed on to us through the Brothers and faculty of Cathedral High School. 1 I m 1 c a iiFcu miWi J r «v v— - tv ]ims cmist pu mm u DOUB TA7 i i ' T ' V tt mwBT IS mm but mi mBcmms bbi ' fHUl, so iWK IMl MMI if THT UmVBT TO SEllO ' MB011BIB5 TO WiS mmisr m ¥Biim pu. iioci Tioiis wmm illSplBE PUIIO BlTll :fel TlBCillBS ARCHDIOCESE OF LOS ANGELES I S3 I W£ST NINTH STREET LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 90015 388-8101 January 9, 1980 Wirti fomiliority we greet l+ie Communify of Cothedrol High School. St. La Salle saw the need of the times to provide an education to the young in order to assist in the salvation of their souls and to prepare them to live productive and peaceful lives. He was a pioneer and innovator in the field of education. Cathedral High School and its faculty by its philosophy and practices attempt to carry out the spirit and goals of St. La Salle. Catheral attempts to provide the atmosphere and a course of studies in religion that helps to develop our students into strong Catholic young men. Our academic program Is designed to allow our graduates to take advantages of the educational opportunities available on the college level. It is our belief that by continuing your education after high school, you will be able to meet the challenges of a new century and aid in the solution of problems that still plague our society. Over many years — from the 1920 9 into the new decade of the 1980 8, Cathedral has been known for its spirit and the loyalty of its students. It is the students of Cathedral with their good sportsman- ship and high standard of conduct who have over al3 the land spread your name . Ifou are the heart and the soul of Cathedral. The present school year has seen improvements and changes at Cathedral. From the refur bishing of the library by the Archdiocese, to the revival of the retreat program, the introduction of the evening marriage course for seniors, and the fine arts elective. Cathedral continues to grow. This year has seen strong student Interest and support in the various projects of student government and organizations. The Red Cross Blood Driva, the funds raised for Toys for Tots by the Christmas tree sale, and the donations made to assist needy families during Thanksgiving witness to your generosity and concern. The dedication and hard work of our athletic tean s are another testi- mony to the spirit and courage of our studentbody. The support those teams have been given has been strong. Throughout all of our efforts we will continue to grow and prosper with your cooperation and enthusiasm. And in all we do we must reiaember that God is our strength and our salvation. .- ..tttJU— CRBBI nil IM MTU Tlil WWs Rim ' m£m wm JEII2B, 2i i Sr V J U S t — •- 6 «e4lfc 90 '  ' d - r Np --4 :t ■► ■ o (I school can run it- self. Somehow in the past years. Homecoming week, which consists of the rally, game, and dance, has always brought together the students not only as classes but as one school united in spirit. This year was no exception. Cathedral chose ten girls from various schools to represent their Home- commg court. The girls were announced for the first time at the rally which was held on Friday November the second. Here the student body cheered on an outstanding performance done by the cheerleaders and the hilarious skit well presented by faculty, then came the pre- sentation of the princesses in which the band played Reunited as the court walked in. Following the rally, the court was then taken to a luncheon at Luminar- ious Restaurant in Monterey Park. The next day Saturday November the third was a big day for all. During the first part of the day the big game took place in which the court and their escorts were again presented during half -rime. Con- cluding this week of excitement was the dance. Music was provided by Best of Friends and Butt to Butt. This was a most suspenseful moment for all present, parti - cullarly the Homecoming court for this was the night one of them was to be crowned queen. The winners were then announced by ASB president Ramiro Villalobos. Many things happen during the three week period before the queen is selected. Each day has its own meaning. First a meeting takes place to which all the can - didates-to-be are met with and told when to come and be interviewed. This is a major step toward making the final decision and one of the most difficult times tor the girls, since they are going to be judged on their personalities and qualifications. The first interview narrows the selection of candidated to ten. By the second interview the choice of queen is made hut kept secret. By this time the i;irls have become more than ten youtig ladies wanting to become Homecommg queen, but a group of friends who enjoy each others company, ehis makes the fol- lowing events more enjoyable. The girls attend a rally where they are presented to the student body. Afterwards they go on to a luncheon with their escorts and fac- ulty members. By this time the spirit of excitement is running through everyone for the waiting of the announcement. Saturday finally arrives, the day many people have anticipated for the past days.
