Here, students can interact, expressing themselves in ways that bring out their ideas and concepts. Interaction at Cathedral many forms. Organizations, classes, rallies, dances, retreats, masses: these all happen here at Cathedral. They reflect the ideas and feelings of the people who make j up the school — their successes and failures, their hopes and dis- illusionments, their likes and dislikes. The reflections can be seen in the faces of the students; here an expression of con- cern, there a look of amusement. All this, of course, ophomores Classes sounds very nice: but is the commun- ity really alive or is it just pre- tending to exist? Perhaps a look at the faces of Cathedral will all you need to know. People die and dead they lay, Motion shows no remorse, For it is but another day And keeps following its course. THE MONSTER Silence was the scene on this lonely street corner — the few persons standing, waiting, even hoping. The distance brings the gigantic people mover from around the corner. Louder and louder it gets — here it comes — an eye-opening experience. All of a sudden it takes up the people, sends them to their seats, and takes off to the next corner, or should I say victim. Inside this thing we call the bus are different kinds of people. I see, for instance, the reader. All he does is read, and he has his own special way of folding a newspaper. Amazing how when you do something for a long time, you can usually master it perfectly. And then there ' s the sleeper; all he does is sleep, and he greases up the windows, which frustrates the observer when he cannot see through the sleeper or his grease spots. Then there ' s the perfect example of sym- pathy — the old lady, looking at you sit while she stands. After a couple of sad stares, you stand and she sits. From Echo Park and the Keystone Cops to Vine Street and the sweet streets of Hollywood. This grand boulevard sweeps me off my feet into a make-believe world of lights, cameras, and action, and stars lighting up the sky for miles. Then it reaches its peak with Honky Tonks and the muffled sounds of $10.00 bands, as if coming out of the sewer holes. And, oh, yes, yes, the view — on a clear night the sea is at your grasp, and all of the bright lights are wanting to hypnotize you. When darkness falls upon the motorway, quest is your destiny. Power to all students -Kirk Cavalier 70 BLUE FREEDOM CONCEPTS As I sat outside, I saw flying life in the sky, seagulls. They glided and soared — playing with the wind. I was so enchanted by them that I became one of them. I found my friends in the world above — we played catch with a small cloud. I left my friends and went on by myself, though not entirely, for the sky went with me. I flew from cloud to cloud with the wind caressing my face as I went on. I looked downward and saw mountains in white and spotted blankets. I looked from horizon to horizon, and they seemed to be within my reach. o 5 I went higher and higher, and things got smaller below, while the sky became bigger and bigger and bluer. I became a bit exhausted so I sat on a cloud. I was thirsty, so I put a straw into the cloud and drank some of its water. It started to get a bit chilly, so I wrapped the sun around myself, and I was soon on my way again, with my wings spread out, as though I were holding hands with the sky. (I got fancy and did a couple of back- strokes and even a few summersaults.) A jet went by me and I had a race with it — I won. I sat on its wing and went along letting it do the flying for me, but it wasn ' t exciting. I left that artificial bird and went on by myself. I wanted to do something exciting, so I let myself fall straight down from 30,000 feet. As I fell, things below became larger, and at 1,000 feet I soared upward once again. As I flew over the sea, I looked beyond and saw that the sea and sky came together with the sun joining them in the middle. I wondered if they were related, since they were both blue. Well, it has been nice visiting with the sky. I have to go back now, but I ' m sure to come back soon. Words on paper. Speech in air. People around me. What makes me me, or you. . you? We are in the midst of war with two powerful countries. The night is calm and peaceful; tonight no one lurks in the shadows. The night is dead, all in their houses, living on romantic candlelight, and waiting. 6.00 p.m. October 26, 7969: Tonight is the night— lovers walking their dogs around parks, young lovers gazing into the night in each other ' s eyes. Stars glistening among tall buildings. The air is cold but brisk. Tired old men floating down Main Street in search of relaxation. Tonight is the night for walks— walks down empty streets, or just a site for a lonely boy sitting on a piece of grass on a corner. And maybe the boy is thinking the same. - Mark jojola 77 THE INTERLOPERS Ulrich Von Cradwitz, in quest of an enemy, Searches in a forest of game that is many , A man he detests whose name is George Znaeym, Ulrich ' s wish is to harm him or kill him, Because a feud three generations before, Must last until one man lies dead on the floor. With hate in their hearts and murder on their minds, The chance had now come, once in a lifetime. But without hesitation a storm there did come, Seemed as though Cod willed it be done, A mass of falling beech tree came thundering down, Both very hurt, they lay trapped on the ground. Exchanging words and cursing each other, They finally became friends, acting like brothers. Shouting for help and listening in vain, Neither knowing or thinking about the pain, They suddenly see figures through the dark woods, And hiding their fears as foolish men should, They laugh at what they see As the creatures draw near, Knowing what they are And hoping what they will not be: Wolves! Kino the lather, Coyotito their little one, and he was no bother. In a Mexican village, they lived in a hut, With no doors to open and no doors to shut. lust down the road and over the hill. Were the homes of the wealthy, majestic yet still. Chandeliers, operas, silverware and dishes. And plenty of servants to fill all their wishes. With the baby in bed one quiet day, While Kino was resting, Juana working away. All of a sudden, quick as could be. There came a scorpion, as Kino did see. He tried all he could to keep it away, Yet as hard as he tried, it wouldn ' I stay. Closer and closer the scorpion came, The infant laughed loud, he thought it a game. As the scorpion struck, juana cried in alarm, But all was too late, it bit on the arm. Coyotito screamed in agony and pain, Yet his arm kept on hurting, all was the same. Kino and wife with baby in hands. Ran past the hill and over the sands. They ran past the church and ran past a shop. And came to the house and came to a stop. ' Twas the M.D. ' s mansion, old andlovely. They knocked at the gate, cold and ugly. The gate was answered by one ill at ease. Who told them to wait there, if they would please. But the doctor said he ' d no time for such, I ' ve many more patients, some are Rich. So the servant replied to Kino and wife, The doctor is out, to save human life. Sensing a lie. Kino did hate. So he lifted his hand to strike the gate. With bleeding hands and knuckles all cut, They both turned back to their own little hut. Coyotito was sick, but did not die, Yet still ran a fever, and it was quite high. And a few days later Coyotito was well. But still where it bit, there was a swell. Kino went diving for pearls that day, And saw something shining, in an oyster it lay. It must be big he thought in his mind. Little did he know what he was to find. To his great surprise there fell in his hand, An enormous white pearl, biggest in the land. He swam to the shore with happiness and glee, It ' s a pearl, a pearl, as deep as the sea! The word spread fast to the M.D. ' s home, To the priest and the beggars, maybe even to Rome. And just as soon as he could the M.D. came, To swindle poor Kino of his newly-found gain. The priest also came, to trick him again. Said Give to the Church, and grace you ' ll obtain. He went to the buyers of pearls the next day, In hope of a deal, so he did say. But with regret their price was too low. All were against him, clearly it showed. And by this time some robbers came, Who beat Kino up and left him lame, juana was worried, so early next day. She stole the pearl, but failed in dismay. Of f to the capitol with their pearl they went, Armed with a knife Kino ' s brother had lent. But the journey was long, andsoon both were stilled, Coyotito was dead, their baby was killed. Homeward they turned, their lesson well learned. Who ' d share their misery, who was concerned? And the pearl became ugly, black as could be, So homeward they threw it, back into the sea. Michael Olivas 73 COMPETITION ' ■■■■-■:-• p J - : J f A 1 ■i V 8tf | nl ft ' ' A.
