The Class of 1960 has entered and left the hallways of Cathedral for the last time, Under the watchful eyes of the Christian Brothers, it has stepped up from its first year as a tightened Freshman Class to its final year as an admirable Senior Class. Looking back we can see some of its outstanding individuals who made it worthy of admiration. Scholastically, Horst Abt brought up the Senior grade average. Manuel Ozuna shone out in the sports spotlight for his three years All-Catholic in baseball and two years All-Catholic in football. ln the record of achievements, Salvador Macias was recognized in his Junior year as? man and was awarded the first Brother Bertram Award. For leadership in Student Qganizations, none could replace Arthur Chavez, head of the largest organization in the school, the Circle C. Also indispensable in organizations was Louie Vasquez. As president of the Block C, Louie won new respect for his club and was an outstanding player on the basket- ball and baseball teams. As a group, the class has left many traces of accomplishments. Its first organized activity was a successful Sophomore Mixer. One year later, not wanting to be overshadowed by achievements of other classes, it undertook the construction of a Junior Project. A basalt brick wall surrounding a Chinese Elm tree was put up in the center of the campus during the Christ- mas vacation of that year. Social activities were then calling and the class answered with the traditional junior Prom which many couples attended. Late-comers, traffic citations, flat tires, and broken fire hydrants all helped to make it as memor- able a night as possible. Finally, Senior year was here. As the Athletic Drive came around, the class got together and came up with a rousing 11771-the highest percentage ever reached by an entire class. As a reward for their efforts, the Senior Class was given a free day from school which was spent at Snow Valley. Later on in the year, the combined treasuries of the Classes of '59 and '60 brought about the Construction of the Senior Project- a concrete wall was built around the north side of the football field and was surrounded by new benches pleasantly shaded by Retusa trees. Many Senior activities followed toward the end of the schoolyear and as graduation neared, blood, . . sweat, and tears was their motto all through final senior examinations. All of the hard effort that has been put into the success of the class has merely been a preview of what will someday be. The success of his future will come from what he has put into his past. eniora YL . 1960 HORST ABT fSt Stephen'sj Amb Sc1ent1st Plu Beta Chl Pres1dent 4 F ,3 4 Honor SOCICW 3, 4 A Q' RODOLFO ACEVES QM.u:acu1ous Medalj -f Track Manager 2, Ad Staff 2 , 4, Maman SOCIEUY 3 Cucle C 3 4 yi I RAUL ACOSTA fLorettoj Amb Electromcs Cu-cle C 3 Semor Chorus PA 1 v- QI-Io1yRedeemerj Amb Englneer Oufdge ,J 'Haj RICHARD AMPARAN lL 'W cRCSlDJ'SCC1OH, Amb Draftsman e ay Yearbook 4 Dance Commnitee 4, Class Off1CEI' 2 eaa 3 i f ALFRED ACOSTA LO L Q A Q Amb MHSICIHH Semor Band 1, 2,3,4 Dance Band 2,3,4 Maman SOCICW 2,3 if NICHOLAS ALDANA fLorettoj Amb Po11ceman Maman Socxety 3,4, Cucle C 3 Glee Club 2, 3, 4 Semor Chorus JAMES ALLARD Lq,O .--at LOUIS ARVISO QSt Anthonyj Amb Ranger Cross Countryj V 2 Cross Country V 4 Track C 2, Same: Chorus N , 'I f? 8. 4.5 .. This interest led to the development of the Phi Beta Chi, commonly known as the Science Club. Under moderator Brother Damian and President Horst Abt, the Club has tried to promote an Lmderstanding of the problems of the modern day. A lecture by Mr. Robbins of the Atomic Energy Com- mission created a furtherment of knowledge in the field of atoms in peaceful uses. 78 Biologists of the club investigate the world of the Protozoa. Herakles marked off the limits of the first Olympic Stadium with his own big feet f12. 77 inches still the Olympian foot measurej. He measured heel to toe 600 times to make a 210 yard stadium. . . . .A flat field surrounded by sloping grass covered side. This is the legend stated by the poet Pindar, The actual Olympic Games began in 776 B. C, when names of the victors were first recorded A ten man panel of judges, the Hellanodikai, questioned athletes concerning their parentage, their character and their physical talents. Those who qualified trained for one month before the Olympic Games. The Greeks looked for Arete or excellence in every phase of life: Moral ar- ete, intellectual arete, and physical arete. They tried to cultivate the whole man in excel- lence. . .Arete. The Greeks greatly admired the beauty and strength of the human body as is shown in their sculpture. But they admired most the Olympian heros themselves next to the Gods, When Diagoras of Rhodes received his Olive wreath of victory his friend shouted to him Die, Diagoras, for you have nothing short of divinity to desire! Statues were set up to honor great athletes and holes were torn out of the city walls to welcome a home-town Olympian Hero. FIRST DAY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES Religious Rites: Following the parade of the athletes came 100 oxen, sheep, bulls and swine marching to their death on sacrificial altars in honor of Zeus, father of all the gods and his god- friends. The ten gold crowned judges dipped their hands in the blood of the altars and took an ity oath to judge the games fairly. Then the athletes likewise swore to compete without fraud or Lv evil intent. SECOND DAY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES Contests for the Beardless Ones , . . The teenage boys performed a preview of the future great athletes of Greece. THIRD DAY OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES The big games begin: By dawn the stadium was filled with a crowd of 40, OOO. The 210 yard long track was 30 yards wide edged with a low flat stone curb. Marble and Gold pillars marked the finish line. The athletes rubbed their bodies down with olive oil to make their skin and musc- les flexible. Then glistening in the early morning sunlight, they drew lots for the first heat of the first race. The stade was the 200 yd. dash. This is where we get the word stadium. . .running the length of the stade. . .stadium. There were 16 contestants in the race. Winners in the four preliminaries competed in the final race for the olive branch crown. Next race, the diaulos, and the dolichos, 24 laps Q2-273 milesj. The victorious athletes ran joyfully from the stadium waving their palm branches, symbols of victory. fThe church likewise portrays her great athletes of God, the martyrs, with palm branches of Victory. Q Wrestling: After anointing themselves with oil the heavily built wrestlers sprinkled their bodies lightly with sand to cut the oil slick Since Herakles had been a. owerful wrestler the Greeks con- - P tinued to regard this sport as the most scientific of all Olympic events. Boxing: The boxers worre leather gauntlets to protect the knuckles, no padding. There were no rounds and you could hit a man when he was down. The bout lasted until one man lost conscious- ness or surrendered. Boxing was rough but nothing as violent as the next event. The Pankration: QFrom pan, all, plus kratos, strength, The pankration was a knock down, drag out, rough-and-tumble pounding and splattering brawl in a muddy pit. Rules: No biting and gouging allowed except among the Spartans. The struggle ended in surrender. . . or death. fThe Athenian Greeks considered the Panlcration to be undignified but tolerated it. j A true indignity: Arrachion found himselftrapped in a combination stranglehold and body scissors. To escape, he twisted his rival's foot until it broke. In agony the other man lifted his hand to signal defeat . . . but never releasing the stranglehold on Arrachion. In that same moment Arrachion died of strang- ulation. He was declared victor, and the olive wreath was placednon his corpse! Aanfom 2 ' elim! p i i, 6 ,- SLM s t' 9 ra cfice Much credit mustbe given tolast year's de- fensive squad as they gave up only 9 points per game on the average. The highlight of our sea- son was our 25-O rout of Loyola. If next seaso.n's offense can match the output of last seasen's defense we will have a very suc- cessful season. . E ' Mr. Salter The entire studentbody should be proud of the 1959 Varsity football team. It was a team picked for the cellar by most experts. But for a few inches and a few seconds they would be champions. The 1960 outlook is bright but only if the boys display the same spirit that the 1959 team had throughout the year. BACKFIELD COACH: Mr' Pedal Mr. Marvin Sampson As far as this season, it was a disappointing year in terms of victoriesg a season Cannot always be evaluated through wins and losses--determination and desire are just as important. We have a very capable team coming back, with good speed in the backfield. However, they cannot feel com- placent, they must strive between now and September to become the very best. The Chariot Race: This was the most spectacular and the most dangerous of the races. Each chariot was drawn by four horses, and'3Tl to 40chariots entered a single race. The coiu'se was nine miles long, FZ laps and 23 uirns around the pylons at each end of the long track. One Chariot Race: There were collisions on the turns, yokes and axles became entangled, chariots overturned and drivers were Eagged in the reins or Uampled and crushed beneath the onrush- ing wheels. In one historic race 40 chariots started and only one - that of Arcesilaus of Cyrene - survived to cross the fin- 1Sh line . 'l' The Pentathlon and race in armor at the Olympic Stadium: fafternoonj The Pentathlon: It was a test in all-round athletic ability in five fields: Running, wrestling, the discus, the Javelin and jumping with weights, a form O-f-I d . . . ,, . . . . roa Jumping. The Pentathlon symbolized the Harmonious Un1on of talents, which the Greeks admired. The Race In Armor: This race was a military exercise and was originally the start of the Olympic Games. The contestant had to run 400 yards wearing greaves Qshin guardsj and helmets and carrying shields three feet in diameter. This event ended the Olympic Games in the spirit of a military pageant.
