W Om of There have been very few people whose influence has been so widely felt that they have been loved and respected by the whole world, but such a person was Pius XII. He led such a perfectly exemplary life that he became as a light, spreading its rays over the earth. People of all faiths looked up to him as a great and holy man, and Catholics, Protestants and Jews alike, expressed their sorrow at his death. He was often referred to as Mary's Pope for his great devotion to the Blessed Mother. That God looked kindly upon this representative of His is a certainty. There is even an unconfirmed report that the Holy Father saw a vision of Christ shortly before his death. This would be a fitting reward for a man who has spent his whole life working in God's vineyard. Pius XII will also be remembered for the tremendous number of audiences he held. No previous Pope had ever held personal audiences with so many thousands of people, many of whom were diplomats from various countries. It was a matter of continual amazement to the people of the world that a man so ad- vanced in years could carry such a heavy work load, You may wonder what connection the late Holy Father had with Cathedral. Why are we dedicating this yearbook to him? The reason becomes obvious when he is thought of as the builder of the Church's spirit of Catholicity. Since Cathedral is a Catholic School, it is directly connected with all aspects of the Church. As the spirit of the Church is built up, the change is reflected in Cathedral. In keeping with our theme then. . .the transition from Church spirit to school spirit is so natural as to make them practically the same thing in a Catholic school. For this reason, we dedicate this yearbook to the memory of Pope Pius XII, one of the truly great men of the Church and of the World.
