He led such a perfectly exemplary life that he became as a light, spreading its rays over the earth. People of all faiths looked up to him as a great and holy man, and Catholics, Protestants and Jews alike, expressed their sorrow at his death. He was often referred to as Mary's Pope for his great devotion to the Blessed Mother. That God looked kindly upon this representative of His is a certainty. There is even an unconfirmed report that the Holy Father saw a vision of Christ shortly before his death. This would be a fitting reward for a man who has spent his whole life working in God's vineyard. Pius XII will also be remembered for the tremendous number of audiences he held. No previous Pope had ever held personal audiences with so many thousands of people, many of whom were diplomats from various countries. It was a matter of continual amazement to the people of the world that a man so ad- vanced in years could carry such a heavy work load, You may wonder what connection the late Holy Father had with Cathedral. Why are we dedicating this yearbook to him? The reason becomes obvious when he is thought of as the builder of the Church's spirit of Catholicity. Since Cathedral is a Catholic School, it is directly connected with all aspects of the Church. As the spirit of the Church is built up, the change is reflected in Cathedral. In keeping with our theme then. . .the transition from Church spirit to school spirit is so natural as to make them practically the same thing in a Catholic school. For this reason, we dedicate this yearbook to the memory of Pope Pius XII, one of the truly great men of the Church and of the World. SW ww-. is Sport, understood in the Christian sense, is an effective school for that great contest which is our earthly life. Your young minds are open to life, anxious to learn, and nature lies before you with its mar- vels and mysteries...You must, therefore, study. sess it, and finally the will to put it into practice with action. , . Be holy youth--a youth, therefore, which prays each day, and which ardently draws ou the source of supernatural life, which puts forth so abundantly from the Church of Christ. . . Human labor is not without dignityg it is not a distasteful and burdensome thing, but rather something to be esteemed and honored and enjoyed. . . Put before them the beauty of Christian life and, in order to prepare them to bring up an upright and happy family, let them taste the happiness of purity unspoiled. . . The Sophs stormed through the athletic contests: football, basket- ball, volleyball and track, and later swept the academic contests. The climax of the week's activities came when the Sophs won the rally with several excellent skits. The Sophs displayed fine spirit throughout the contest. N ..,7w44 Although unable to compete with the Sophs, the Frosh fought hard and showed sportsmanship and spirit all through the ordeal of Frosh Week. They placed several times in the field events, and completely outyelled the Sophs at the rally, but were unable to accumulate enough points to dcpose their older and more experienced rivals. The Frosh are to be congratulated for keeping up the fight and not giving up when they were losing. This makes for a good beginning in forming the ir Cathedral spirit. As a reward for their effort, the Senior Class as a whole went on a trip to Snow Valley. The great success of the drive was attributed to in- creased spirit within the student body, as well as the var- iety of incentive awards which were offered. I I I M I Working quietly behind the scenes, formulating the laws and res- olutions which govern the student body, the Student Council has lab- ored through the year to make this a better Cathedral. Representatives from each of the classes and school organizations have set forth their ideas and suggestions for the improvement of student body and campus. Typical among the decisions reached by the Council are these: the purchase of an AM-FM radio to play in the cafeteria during lunch periods, a unanimous vote for silence in the cafeteria on Wednesdays during Lent as a public act of self-denial, a.nd a decision to expand the rally committee by having representatives from each of the classes rather than just from each general group. These are but a small sample of the work carried on by the Coun- cil. They also pass on appropriations for special projects, receive the reports of the various organizations, and decide on future activities. The bi-monthly meetings have been conducted with great efficiency by Ruben Jauregui and Ray Reyes, Student Body President and Vice- President, respectively. One activity of the Student Council that is not much publicized is the student court. Working discreetly in the background, it de- cides the cases of offenders against the order and welfare of the student body. This past year, the court was presided over by Judge Ray Reyes, and the rest of the court was comprised of selected mem- bers of the Council. The student government of Cathedral is indeed well-organized. It is truly a government of the students, by the students, and for the students of Cathedral High School, whose aim it is to foster and maintain the spirit of Cathedral by utilizing the qualities of leader- ship and good example to be found among the members of the Stu- rlonf Rnrlv. Under the direction of Bro- ther Edward, there has been a new effort this past year to re- vive interest in high scholastic standing at Cathedral High. The Honor Society has com- pletely reorganized in order to give a chance for membership to more students. The C.S.F. acts as a governing committee of the organization. The Honor Society of any school should hold an important position, for, in the words of Brother Edward, It is the actual nucleus of the school--the cen- tral point about which the other organizations revolve. Comments from all sides have acclaimed this band as the best ever. Sparked by Manuel Menchaea, who is also the student director, Louie Mendoza, and Willie Armenta in the brass section, along with Tony Romero and Alex Gutierrez on Sax, the band has added a pleasant musical note to the school rallies and assemblies, helping to build up the spirit of the students before important basketball and football games, as well as playing at some of the games themselves. The real test of their artistic skill came at the Spring Concert, which is the most important musical event of the year. They played such numbers as Blue Fantasy , Design for Autumn, and Town Hall . They also performed at the night rally, the Christmas Program, and the Father and sons' night, as well as participated in the Marymount College Musical Fiesta. Led by Dan- ny Garcia, meeting often at activ- ity period and after school, repre- sentatives from each of the classes worked out the problems involved, plan- ned time schedules, helped prepare props, music, and many other tasks attached to putting on a successful rally. The biggest affair on the agenda was the night rally for the spring sports. It was, as always, a tremendous success. The purpose of a rally is, of course, to work up enthusiasm within the student body before a big football or basketball game, in order to insure good attendance and cooperative cheering at the game. The rally committee was assisted in achieving this end by the versatile talents of Albert Sierra, John Corgiat, Paul jen- sen, and Dan Spencer, just to name a few of the many tal- ented performers of the past year. I I I 'Q x. 9 ll Mrs. Morgan, Mother's President presents Father Torra with Christmas gift. Alllll Mr. Raymond Boring accepts Presidency of Father's Club. The combined parents' organizations moved into action early this year, making it one of the most successful years yet for the Par- ents' Clubs. Starting- off with a very large turnout for the family picnic in September, the activities contin- ued through the open house and pot luck dinner in Octo- ber, to the big fiesta in November, which climaxed the Ath letic Drive. The fiesta was a great success, netting over seven hundred dollars for the Mothers' Club alone. Next on the agenda was the preparing of Thanksgiving baskets for the brothers, to be fol- lowed in December by the Christmas party, which featured a forty-min ute entertainment. As a Christmas gift to the school, the parents bought a life-size man- nikin for the Life Science department, as well as a giant eye, ear, and flo- wer, to facilitate the study of nature in the school. Next was the banquet for the athletes who participated in the fall sports, followed by a tremendously successful fashion show in February, which- net- ted another seven hundred dollars. There followed the banquet for the ath- letes for the spring sports and the farewell pot luck dinner in may. This seemingly impossible amount of acitvity was under the well-quali- fied and excellently coordinated direction of Mrs. Morgan and Mr. Boring, presidents of their respective organizations. They were advised by Faculty Moderators, Brother Leonard and Brother Augustine. 49 . .ag Roll the presses! the call is heard. Cathedral's print shop is in action! The print room buzzes with activity as the small but efficient organization goes to work. Meeting every day during the activity period under the dir- ection of Brother Armand, the six members of the print shop turn out office forms, football and basket- ball schedules, tickets, and other miscellaneous printing, thus rep- resenting a tangible saving to the school while gaining practical ex- perience in the art of printing. This year has been the best one yet for the print shop. With the purchase of new type from money donated by the Fathers' Guild, the shop has become en- tirely self-sufficient, no longer having to depend on outside print- ing establishments for type setting. Great thanks is owed to Mr. Malon of the Father's club for his time given to instruction for the members of this group. Robert Saenz Richard Estrada Richard Esparza Koji Terasawa Ramon Gallardo A1 Aguilar Herman Herrera ' dent As the memorable dances, shows, and activities com body, so in predecession come the flamboyant posters. Under the artistic guidance of Brother Claude, the talented group has shown the qualities of imagination, color and ingenuity. Worthy of mention are the refined attributes of Art Agui1ar's productions. However it is the whole organization, though small in size, that has offered an appreciable amount of life and excitement to the glance of every Cathedralite. 5 e to the delight of the stu xg K U Q I - , ,QW-Q .,,,,,,,, 1- el-N f-5, WW 9 J' as Q 'S X ' ' 2 W H 3 S? After twelve years of developing and improving the spirit of Cathedral, his name is known and respected by all. The first ten of those years were spent coach- ing the Phantom football squad., and, as most of us know, he presented us with three championship teams within that time, in '47, '51 and '54, Of those three he is proudest of the team of '54, when nine of his players made All-Catholic. lt has always been in the interest of Si to bring out the best in the Phantoms. teaching them good sportsmanship, self-sacrifice, team play, and devotion to Cathedral's standards. Often has he expressed his admiration for the men of Cathedral, seeing in them those qualities which can be easily molded into real virtue. His football experience did not begin at Cath- edral. After high school he went on to Loyola Uni- versity, where he starred on the football squad. His first coaching job was at Mount Carmel, where he spent four years, coming up with a champion- ship team in '44. Forced to give up coaching because of an illness, he is now athletic director. He is kept busy by his duties of scheduling games, buying equipment, and arranging transportation, just to name a few, but his personal influence is still felt as he is always willing to take time for a friendly word in conversation or advice. Disarufino, a triple threat ever since playing at little Santa Teresita grammar school, has developed into 6' 1 , 185 pounder. Called Bullet by his teammates and friends, Disarufino has quite an arm. Completing passes Q65 to 1121 this year, Disarufino has also rolled up a fabulous total yardage rushing and passing of 3913 yards in three years at the helm of the Phantom Varsity. His greatest value has been in the deftness with which he sent into action plays of the Phantom Varsity from his quarterback position. Speed, change of pace, and fakes accounted for many a sudden gainer on the ground, while in the air his passes would find their marks straight and swift as a bullet, for which he has received his nicl-cname. His steady, easy-going, calm, modest spirit has been a valuable quality in keeping him cool under fire on the field. He has won a host of friends by his willingness to be one among his schoolmates with the rest. His determination to al- ways be a top challenger has gained him respect and admiration as a champion. Numerous have been the awards with which he has been honored. In the words of his coach, however, he can best be proud of having been chosen as Most Valuable Player by his own squad. His future in the world of sports is bright as many offers have come to him to play in collegiate ranks. At the close of the year with the graduation of another Senior Class, a ques tion usually arises: what of next year's Seniors? Who is there to take up the leadership of the student body, to carry on its traditions and perhaps to bring it to new heights of accomplishment? The answer to this question can best be found by looking at the present Junior Class. Outstanding in the field of academics are Horst Abt and David Lee, who promise to be the stimulators of intense intellectual activity next year as the hard core of the newl formed Honor Socie Y 'CY' In activities and organizations, leadership may be found in Dennis Dodd, Marian Society, jim Mendoza, Robert Rosales, Mike Pickering and Ramon Cruz in the Yearbook, joe Vigil and Dick Lynch for the newspaper, Ed Patino in photography, and Rudy Castorena in Circle C. For '58-'59, two student body office holders have been Willie Neira as secretary and Louie Vasquez, Treasurer. Sportswise, up and coming stars can be seen in Sal Macias and Manuel Ozuna in football, Tony Barron and Louie Vasquez in basket- ball, Willie Neria and Carlos Mancillas for track and in baseball Manuel Ozuna and Richard Pedroza. As an indication of the present junior Class' possible aggressive spirit, there is the junior project, initiated by jim Mendoza and completed with the assistance of Enrique Casillas, Peter Villa- nueva and Rudy Castorena, The outcome was an added note of beauty to the school yard in the sturdy cement block garden plot protecting a newly planted Chinese Elm which promises to offer its shade as a welcome spot for relaxation to many future Cahtedralites, On tope for the Athletic Drive was class 11-2 which went to Mt. Waterman for their class outing. In Intramurals, the 11-3 football champs played 10-5 in the finals but lost, and in basketball after a close battle, 11-1 was overcome by 9-5 for the school championship. To close off the year's highlights, the junior Prom attended by 100 couples held on April 3 at the Riviera Country Club. This meager listing certainly gives some prom- ising indications for a possible great year ahead. They began by participating in the contests of Frosh Week, and a little later, in the Athletic Drive. Representing them in the various activities were Dave Salinas - Speech - and Greg Padilla - Glee Club. The class was also repre- sented in the various sports, with Class members lettering in many of these, In February, the scene changed to one of flying snowballs and tumbling students, as the class took a trip to snow-covered Mr. Waterman. The plans of the group for the fumre include further participa- tion in the activities at Cathedral, and the formation of a better and more closely united class. With this new knowledge the participants for the Frosh Week events were soon chosen . Class 9-1 contributed greatly to the spirited competition in the Week's contests. QJ In accordance with Cathedral's tradition in sports, this class was represented in J. V. football by Paul Velasco. There will be more participants in the years to Come, as any member of the class will assure you. Principal Brother Gene speaking to the Student Body in weekly briefing after Friday Mass, my Many times a student will wonder what it's like to be on the other side of the front desk. Well, in Brother Gene's experience this wonderment has been fulfilled in more ways than one. Brother Gene, a former Phantom of Cathedral, returned to his Alma Mater in 1953, not only to find out what it was like be- hind the teacher's desk, but also as Vice-Principal in 1957, and now as Principal in 1959. Cathedral has received one of its own to be a molder of its spirit. Graduating in 1947, Brother Gene ended four outstanding years as student and athlete. He lettered in football and track, set- ting a Catholic League record in the mile. Sports weren't his only interest, as he won honors in studies and the school activities, like the Chimes Paper and Yearbook, found him once more successful. Upon graduation he received the General Excellence medal for his scholastic and athletic accomplishments. After graduation he entered the Brothers' Novitiate for a year of spiritual formation. At St. Mary's College he received his degree of Bachelor of Science with honors. His first teaching experience began at Garces High in Bakersfield just prior to his coming to Cathedral. While at Cathedral he received an M. A. degree in Education from Immaculate Heart. The students of Cathedral can certainly find in Brother Gene one quite capable of appreciating their efforts in the classroom, chapel and on the field, not only from their point of view as individuals, but with that outlook that knows truly THAT CATHEDRAL SPIRIT. HIGH y U lui 45 'ac 4!oce' MMM 246626 After an absence of one year to teach at Bishop Armstrong High School, Brother Edward is once again at Cathedral in his old position of Vice Principal He was heartily welcomed back by the students who knew him before, and greeted with bewilderment by the Freshmen and Soph- omores who knew nothing of this famed teacher of the Universal Light. 0 A 0 . . Z To the Class of 1959-- Education is a continuous process. We pass from one phase of life to another, seeking always to improve and advance toward our ultimate goal. In leaving high school you Cannot assume that yoiu' education has been completed, rather the role of the formal teacher may be ended while the role of the student has become even more important, Education demands self-direction, Experience does not result in knowledge unless a personal responsibility is assumed for the direction and interpretation of this experience, No teacher or educational system C311 guarantee results for this reason, It is to the credit of the Class of 1959 that the major- ity of its members actively seeks to improve itself and to en- gage in this self-educative process. The members of the faculty are happy to have been a part of the means whereby you as students have been given the opportunity to develop yourselves as Christians and intel- ligent members of society. We know that you will be far bet- ter persons for having given yourselves wholeheartedly to the education that has been offered to you. Of the many groups to whom the student body owes a debt of gratitude, there is the help employed about the school. The members of the staff work uncomplainingly behind the scenes throughout the year, to maintain as far as possible the satisfaction of mankind. This refers particularly to the office staff, which processes our records, makes out receipts for tuition, sells tickets for basketball games, and does innumerable other tasks. But there is also the maintenance help, whichlabors to keep athous-- and and one odds and ends in place anywhere from plugging leaks in the roof to pulling weeds, and clean-up.
