The same bond that unites all to Our Blessed Mother prompts us to honor her in this cent enary, since it is she who is the bridge between Christ and the world This cosmos united in technology and science, is split in two by the ruthless chains of tyranny, sm, and false knowledge ln this age, when so much is said to be believable only on sight, it is gratifying t 1 honor something that came about through the faith of a simple peasant girl, now a saint The celebration of Lourdes is a reason for the whole world to come back Our Lady did not appear to Bemadette because she was a saint, rather, Bernadette became a Saint because Our Lady appeared to her For the re mainder of her life, she obeyed in the fulness the message of Lourdes She did penance and prayed Her motive in obedience, in charity, in carry ing her crosses was the great love she had for God and His Blessed Mother Mere apparitions did not change her life it was the acceptance of sorrow, the doing of heroic virtue that enabled her to scale the heights of sanctity The splendor of Lourdes lies not in the 15 million people attending the shrine this year, not in the spectacle of vast throngs, not even in the phys J' fl 1 sf! from the extreme of science to the supreme experience of Mary's vision. ical cures that sometimes occur there It has its significance in that Mankind is on its knees, that sufferers pray for other sufferers. . . the thousands that flock daily to Lourdes leave, maybe not cured in body. . . but cured in the spirit, full of praise and grat- itude that God should allow His Blessed Mother to inspire the world. We are sanctified through Mary appearing in our lives. Through ros- aries, shrines, and campus activities, our Blessed Mother offers us the vision of Her Son. Our voices are united in the Weekly Mass, where hymns of respect for Mary fill the Gym. Our Holy Father, Pius XII, has explained that through the miracles of her shrine, the Mother of God is keeping the supematural destiny of man before the eyes of all men. It is fitting then, that we, spiritual children of Mary, should honor her, and more than that, reach God through her. The spirit of Lourdes must permeat our daily lives, no matter how hum- drum our existence. It is with pride that the students of Cathedral High School share this celebration of the centenary of Lourdes with the entire world. ff wt
