B Of U, C QIT1-q D, Fofhep B 3 . . . . . . the 1958 CHIMES Yearbook to Brother Bertram, Principal of Cathedral High School from 1952 to 1958, not only for his outstanding devotion during these years to the boys of Cathedral High School but also on this his Silver jubilee year as a Christian Brother. Perhaps the most lasting impression he will have left with the students will be that ever present solicitude to make each one not only loyal to the ideals of Cathedral but in a certain sense to Be Cathedral . By this expression, which he often used, he showed his lseen under- standing and appreciation for the spirit which alone is special to Cathedral. Tireless and efficient have been his efforts in the administration of the school. Ever watchful for bettering conditions, he arranged the curriculum to fit the needs of the students and gave proper leeway to electives and extra-curricular activities while at the same time ever bettering the religious, academic and moral standards of the school. He has introduced an art department, mttal shop, activity periods, dancing lessons, preserx ed the great cultural fete of the year, the Spring Concert, Communion Crusade, Circle C and Marian Society, saw to the revision of the Student Body Constitution, approved the Queen's Pageant and Ball, and organized a Guidance and Counseling program. In a material way Brother has seen to many improvements, namely a new science lab, school offices, garages, locker rooms, lavatories, renovated library, landscaping and extension to the Brother's house. Throughout his 25 years as a Christian Brother about half have been spent as an admin- istrator and superior, first as Director of Seholastics at St. Ma1'y's College, then as Principal of Christian Brothers school in Sacramento and now at Cathedral, thus giving proof to Brother's out- standing ability, not only as a Principal, but as an example of all those qualities most desired in a Christian Brother: a deep spirit of faith, exact obedience, success as a professional teacher, and a love for the salvation of souls. Proof of the students heartfelt appreciation for all he has done came when they invited Bishop Bell to olfer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to present Brother with a Spiritual Bouquet giving evidence of the one evidence of success a Christian Brother most desires--the prayers of his students which will win for him and for them the happiness of heaven.
