Perhaps the most lasting impression he will have left with the students will be that ever present solicitude to make each one not only loyal to the ideals of Cathedral but in a certain sense to Be Cathedral . By this expression, which he often used, he showed his lseen under- standing and appreciation for the spirit which alone is special to Cathedral. Tireless and efficient have been his efforts in the administration of the school. Ever watchful for bettering conditions, he arranged the curriculum to fit the needs of the students and gave proper leeway to electives and extra-curricular activities while at the same time ever bettering the religious, academic and moral standards of the school. He has introduced an art department, mttal shop, activity periods, dancing lessons, preserx ed the great cultural fete of the year, the Spring Concert, Communion Crusade, Circle C and Marian Society, saw to the revision of the Student Body Constitution, approved the Queen's Pageant and Ball, and organized a Guidance and Counseling program. In a material way Brother has seen to many improvements, namely a new science lab, school offices, garages, locker rooms, lavatories, renovated library, landscaping and extension to the Brother's house. Throughout his 25 years as a Christian Brother about half have been spent as an admin- istrator and superior, first as Director of Seholastics at St. Ma1'y's College, then as Principal of Christian Brothers school in Sacramento and now at Cathedral, thus giving proof to Brother's out- standing ability, not only as a Principal, but as an example of all those qualities most desired in a Christian Brother: a deep spirit of faith, exact obedience, success as a professional teacher, and a love for the salvation of souls. Proof of the students heartfelt appreciation for all he has done came when they invited Bishop Bell to olfer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to present Brother with a Spiritual Bouquet giving evidence of the one evidence of success a Christian Brother most desires--the prayers of his students which will win for him and for them the happiness of heaven. The same bond that unites all to Our Blessed Mother prompts us to honor her in this cent enary, since it is she who is the bridge between Christ and the world This cosmos united in technology and science, is split in two by the ruthless chains of tyranny, sm, and false knowledge ln this age, when so much is said to be believable only on sight, it is gratifying t 1 honor something that came about through the faith of a simple peasant girl, now a saint The celebration of Lourdes is a reason for the whole world to come back Our Lady did not appear to Bemadette because she was a saint, rather, Bernadette became a Saint because Our Lady appeared to her For the re mainder of her life, she obeyed in the fulness the message of Lourdes She did penance and prayed Her motive in obedience, in charity, in carry ing her crosses was the great love she had for God and His Blessed Mother Mere apparitions did not change her life it was the acceptance of sorrow, the doing of heroic virtue that enabled her to scale the heights of sanctity The splendor of Lourdes lies not in the 15 million people attending the shrine this year, not in the spectacle of vast throngs, not even in the phys J' fl 1 sf! from the extreme of science to the supreme experience of Mary's vision. ical cures that sometimes occur there It has its significance in that Mankind is on its knees, that sufferers pray for other sufferers. . . the thousands that flock daily to Lourdes leave, maybe not cured in body. . . but cured in the spirit, full of praise and grat- itude that God should allow His Blessed Mother to inspire the world. We are sanctified through Mary appearing in our lives. Through ros- aries, shrines, and campus activities, our Blessed Mother offers us the vision of Her Son. Our voices are united in the Weekly Mass, where hymns of respect for Mary fill the Gym. Our Holy Father, Pius XII, has explained that through the miracles of her shrine, the Mother of God is keeping the supematural destiny of man before the eyes of all men. It is fitting then, that we, spiritual children of Mary, should honor her, and more than that, reach God through her. The spirit of Lourdes must permeat our daily lives, no matter how hum- drum our existence. It is with pride that the students of Cathedral High School share this celebration of the centenary of Lourdes with the entire world. ff wt J .W if . 1, . ,., ff! Q '..I',.,,.. ,vc :. The Rosary must be used as a weapon for asking God's help. When Bernadette was being questioned by the committee, she answered all doubts with an unwavering power in simplicity. In school, we learn the same lesson. Perseverance and humility will lead us to the Truth. The daily rosary expresses recognition of need for help in class. The weekly Confession, clearing doubts, enables us to do penance. The weekly Mass gives meaning to our schoolwork. WZ X .ff fwl 'W fvu 1 s A -ff. 1 I t K .sf Wliun' 'Z 1 Y. In football, they had 5 IV and Varsity players, the former being Richard Boring, joe Mack, Cliff Schier, Tom Rendon. and Frank Grana, the lat- ter being Alex Ornelas and Greg Snaric. P. , elevates the Blessed Sacrament during bene- diction at the student retreat in September. Primary in the purposes for which Cathedral strives during the process of form- ing boys into Christian gentlemen, is a consciousness of the importance of living in God's Grace and remembering His Presence everywhere. In the classroom, in athlet- ics, in the weekly Student Body Mass, God is recognized as the ultimate aim of all endeavors. Through the Daily Rosary, the various prayers before and after class, and the example of the faculty, devoted to helping boys save their souls, all efforts are offered to God in an act of Worship. This year, daily Holy Communion in the Brothers' Chapel, and retreats highlighted the spiritual activity. In September, the students were immediately led to make plans for a successful school year by means of a retreat held under the guidance of Father Charles Guilfoyle, C. P. During the months of November, December, and January the Seniors found themselves in the solitude of the Sierra Madre Retreat House, where they made serious reflections on their Spiritual Life. At mid-year, the end of january, once more prayer and silence became the total atmosphere of Cathedral as Father Joel, C. P. , reviewed the last ends of life. Father Torra, student body Chaplain, made himself available for counsel- ing, Confession, and frequent visits to classes, his mind on Spiritual matters was revealed, not only through weekly sermons at Mass, but also through his monthly column, Our Padre Speaks . Rated as the underdog team, the Phan- toms started off surprisingly by scoring after a steady drive with Disarufino push- ing over from the two. Navarro's kick made it 7-O. Finding a weak spot at de- fensive left end, the Saints in one run scored from 50 yards but failed to con- vert Lhus making it 7-6. The breaks came for the Saints in the second quarter when they blocked a Cathedral punt recovering it on the four which lead to a score and an intercepted pass which went for thirty yards and a score. Not to be outdone the Phantoms scored immediately when All-Catholic halfback Ken Ogata took the kickoff and behind ideal blocking raced 99 yards to a touchdown to tie up the game 13-13. However, the Phantoms came right back on a touchdown by All Catholic Raul Disarufino. The Crusaders scored again on a run by halfback Al Katz, who consistently gave the Phantom defense trouble. However, halfback Ken Ogata fooled the Crusader defense on a slant run and scored standing up to bring the Phantoms up to within one point of the Crusad- ers, the PAT tied the score at 13-13. The Crusaders won on a touchdown by Hank Moraga, however, the Phantoms nearly scored on a recovered fumble, but the final gun sounded, and the score read Mt. Playing without any first stringers Tony Abdalla, Hank Chavez, Dan Grady, Ken Cgata, and Cosmas Williams, the Phantoms employed reserve strength to defeat Notre Dame. Notre Dame drew first blood on a two yard plunge by Shugel, the Phantoms scored twice in the second quarter, one tally coming on a six-yard run by Sam Navarro, and the sec- ond on a 45 yard pas-run from Disarufino to Hayes: Navarro added both PAT's and the Phan- toms were ahead. In the second half, Cathedral scored on a T. D. by Disarufino, while Notre Dame was held to one tally, which came in the final period of the contest. On the offense Disarufino, Pardo, Venegas, Tamayo, and Navarro and Hayes shone, while All-Catholic players joe Sciarra and Martin Mor- ales, and Bill Frawley, whose block of a punt set up a first quarter tally by Pardo, were outstanding on defense. d Ornelas Close in 0 GH na Ndvarr Crusader. ilucwln rrf1PPed ml-7 CANTWELL This game had been postponed from Cathedral's second league game to its last, because of flu in the Cardinal camp. Flores, Manager 91 Varsity Basketball Cathedral's Phantoms have every reason to be proud of their 1958 Varsity Basketball squad. Although they did not take the crown, it can be said that they were in every way equal to, if not better than the best of the Catholic League. With the return of three of last year's first team which saw the upset of Carmel's great '57 squad, hopes were high for an outstand ing season. In the pre-season competition proved too easy. It wasn't until the Mount Carmel Tournament that the real test came. The Phantoms proved no easy victims. Defeating Pius they took third while Cantwell outlasted the Crusaders to win the tourney for the first time. Bob Martinez and Raul Disarufino were chosen on the all-tourney team. In the Edgewood Tournament, Cathedral went all the way to the finals, losing by one point to Covina but again showing their superior quality. Drawing the toughest team in the league for their first encounter, the Phan- toms matched Carmel's Crusaders for three quarters, but lost out in the last. Pius was an easy foe as Ross Fontes came within three points of tieing the school scoring record for one game with 36 points. It was the foulest night of the season when the Phantoms went down before St. Anthony's. All will agree that the Phantoms should have had this one, if it had not been for circumstances . Cathedral's greatest game of the season came against the Cardinals of Cantwell. The Cardinals were rated to take the Catholic League and the C. I.F. on the basis of a 15 game winning streak, and the winning of the Carmel and Santa Maria tournaments. Continued on Page 94 FRONT L-R: R. Disarufino, R. Fontes, R. Martinez, R. Reyes W. Rolfe. Lcd by Thomas Martinez, student body Vice-President, the Cathedral High Student Council, consisting of student body officers, class presidents, activity and organizations leaders, met bi-weekly during the school year to coordinate and initiate student body acti- vities. Numbering many among its worthwhile projects, the Student Council formed and prudently utilized the Cathedral High Student Court. This democratic form of government had as its objective to discipline, through well-directed student judgment, individuals who violated the principles implied in the Spirit of Cathedral. This proved to be so effective and impressive that it made other schools aware of Cathedral's Student Government, its purposes and its functions. Scholarship for Service and the stimulation of inter- est through out the school concerning the importance of a high scholastic standing is the goal so successfully attained by the CSF this year, under the presidency and moderation of Richard Hernandez and Brother Gordian. To start off the year, a forum on College Life was held with local high schools in October. Tours of a science laboratory and a trek to the Huntington Art Gallery of San Mar- ino were next on the schedule. Closing the year, Cathedral's Honor Society presented the largest academic forum in Catho- lic League History, with Darryl Hickman, motion picture and T. V. star, and a Cathedral alumnus himself, as guest speaker. Every Catholic League member school and eleven girls' high schools participated. The honor of being a life member in the CSF is the highest award of merit that the Society may bestow. Led by President Richard Hernandez, other CSF'ers who received Life membership were: Fernando Sanchez, Vice -Presidentg Wayne Dance, Secretary, Larry Yamamoto, Ted Tsukahara, Tony Abdalla, and Oscar Valdivia. Regular activities sponsored by the CSF are: the annual Parochial Grammar School Academic Contest, Frosh week academic contest, and the awarding of a plaque to the homeroom possessing the highest scholastic average in the school for an academic quarter. To enable the awarding of a small scholarship to a deserving senior, a popcorn machine was set up this year by the Society. KNEELING L-R: D. Lee, R. Hattori, R. Villanueva, H. Abt. V. Kientz, R. Applicants for Block C report for interview. The Block C, under the guidance of its moderator, Brother Luke, turned in a rather successful year. The agenda began with the athletic events of Frosh Week and the Intra-mural basketball, copped by class 9-3. All home games of the JV Football team featured assistance by the Block C. Initiation followed football season, and the club membership was bolstered to 39 let- termen. All home basketball games brought the Block C in as ushers and parking lot attendants. Road games were not forgotten, however, as the club mimeographed directions to games and posted them throughout the school. Under the leadership of john Hayes, President, Norbert Ruiz, Vice-Pres- ident, and Martin Morales, Sgt-at-arms, the Block C continued its activ- ities in the spring by initiating a new intra-mural program of volleyball, the first such sport to be held in 'mural ranks. The Annual Grammar School Basketball Tournament, captured this year by St. Bernard's parochial school, was held in March by the association. Assistance at all home track meets concluded the year's athletic program for the club. Social activities included a picnic and initiation, which bols- tered membership for next year's Block C. Because of its position in the school, the Circle C must be a sharp, active club throughout the entire year. In the many and varied Jobs performed, it commands much respect from the student body. As the service club ol' the school, it must take charge of l.eeping order along the halls, in the cafeteria and the gym. It must assist at the dances by parking cars, serve re- freshments and clean up afterwards. All special functions, such as the Fiesta, Queen's Ball, and Spring Concert, during the year ran smoothly and successfully through the help of the Circle C. This year, because of the splendid cooperation of the student body, the faculty, and the members themselves, the work of the club was very efficient. Through the leadership of Robert Bieggar, President, and Brother Daniel and Brother Armand, moderators, the Circle C retained its place of honor and respect among the school clubs. They had the unenviable position of putting together one of the best pieces of journalism in the state. Assisting them in their task were the departmental heads: Dom- inic Ferrante-Features, Ray Duran-News, and Louis Guapo-Sports. The format of the Chimes this year was noted for its timely feature and news articles, and received commendations from the Chamber of Commerce, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles City College journalism Meeting, and the Saint Maryls College Press Convention. The Chimes boasts a national and international-wide circulation. Many members of the journalism staffs of higher institutions are graduates of the fine coach- ing given them by moderator, Brother Patrick. An integral part of the journalistic program is participation in the Examiner SSA, boasting this year five Cathedral members, one of whom, Bob Alesi, was Associate Editor of this high school section of the Examiner. Rounding off the list of journalistic endeavors was the publi- cation of the PHANTOM KICKOFF, a football program edited by Dominic Ferrante, Ted Tsukahara, Ray Duran, and Louis Guapo. To meet weekly under the direction of a moderator and discuss problems of the teen-age en- vironment, particularly of the school, and to prudently ACT on OBSERVATIONS AND IUDGMENTS is the pur- pose of the Cathedral Section of the Young Christian Students Movement, better known as the YCS. Using the tools of the Gospel and Social In- quiries, the YCS strives to influence its environment in a Christ-like way, to serve, educate, and represent every teen-ager in the collective environment, which is most commonly the Student Community. At Cathedral, the YCS this year was composed of three groups: the Student Leaders group, which dis- cussed school problemsg the Senior Council, which con- sidered Senior activities and problems, the junior Class 40' :N group, which discussed junior class problems.
