PUBLISHED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA H ... Yau re Cath -f f' dx ,x .yi QP' , , 4 dral ow. s N xyhx Our theme depicts the Freshman being introduced to the Cathedral spirit. You're Cathedral now, he's told. He must search, discover and develop slowly but surely until he possesses that one common element that makes for the Cathedral student. Inherent in each Freshman are the qualities which, though dormant, will emerge through the process called Cathedral -the Senior. On each division page will be found the typical Freshman showing him experiencing some new phase of Cathedral life. A Senior is there likewise pictured, the example, as it were, of what the Freshman will become. Sw Q xii lr, .4 Lu 5,4 'or L.- xx 3 '-4 ,EV 70 Me Splinters of shadow now mark the cobblestones of life's teenway over which the class of '56 trudged to come upon the highway of attain- ment. Hardly time to do it all-the marvel of hearts and minds raising an edifice of faith for the morrow of opportunities and careers yet sealed in destiny. The magnitude of this feat is past our sight. We watched. Your days were not long enough and your nights too few for arrang- ing, selecting, discarding, deciding your ioy of living. In the memories of Cathedral-c l a s s e s, prayerful moments, clubs, games, picnics- all the days of blessings that sur- rounded you, feel the throb of living might and carry on to a glorious finish in service to God and fellow men. ll XJ' Vice-Principal 0Z'46?ld-46641-'64 A new phase of your lives is about to commence. For some of you it will be but a transition period from High School to Collegeg for others it will bring new responsibilities of earning a livelihood in some trade or occupation, for still others it will consume a period of service in the armed forces. Your paths will sepa- rate to find new experiences, new friends, new environment, all of which will tend to influence atti- tudes, iudgments, and decisions. However, you have been well in- structed in a philosophy of life that should help you to remain firm in your convictions despite the dis- turbing, confusing elements in en- vironmental changes. May your education in the Catholic religion be your support and your security, so that you become unshaken and undisturbed no matter what the fu- ture may bring. God bless you and may you ever be aware of His pres- ence wherever you may be. f.Zfw4.- fi ..,. God owns me. Throughout one's High School career this little re- minder-proyer is emphasized. Terse- ly it covers the idea ot the Faith. It put to use in living, it produces the contident, able, Christian rnan. Cathedralites, you can bet, do make use ot this prayer. Throughout the school is the evidence. Student or- ganizations have strived to keep God before the minds ot the stu- dent body. This year the Cross erected by the Seniors on the Senior 45:4 Seniors at weekly Mass. building is a visual proof ot this. The nevvly formed Marian Society is a further indication. Frequent periods for prayer throughout the day keep one in the presence ot God. In addition, daily Rosary, weekly Student Body Mass and con- fession, Communion Crusade, an- nual retreat, the opportunity ot daily Mass are all means of deep- ening this spirit. At Cathedral we have a prayer that summarizes this religious attitude. Live Jesus in our hearts. Forever! Motto of the club throughout California is 'Scholarship for Service. In keeping with this motto, the Chapter at Ca- thedral operates the Annual Grammar School Academic Con- test and awards scholastic achievement inthe school. An innovation this year was the introduction of informal dis- cussions at meetings on topics of academic interest. This was carried out by the members themselves, each speaking on a topic of his choice. Lectures were also asked of some of the faculty memloers. The purpose of this system is to give them a conversational knowledge of scientific topics. 1. CHL' ' 2nd Semesteriist Row: T. Tsukahara, J. Ford, P Forney, J. Di Maggio, R. Lew. Qnd Row: L. The Yearbook is in reality a picture history. lt is in the hands of six editors: Editor-in-Chief, Ac- tivities, Organizaitons, Sports, Photography, Ad- vertising Editors. From very early in the school year, the editors met almost daily to compose a schedule, a working plan, a theme and cover. Among the first difficulties encountered were the distribution of pages, and the selection of a dedication and a theme. The theme is seen, literally, from cover to cover. The approach to each deadline was especially trying on the edi- tors, but seeing the annual in production at the printers and cover manufacturers inspired them to improvement. With a sense of achievement the editors sent the final pages to the publishers, and with a sense of pride they present the finished product to the students: This is our creation for your enioy- ment inthe years to come. 67 6? Eight times a year the Cathedral Chimes goes to press reporting the news of Phantoms in action. Meet- deadlines, making headlines, cor- recting articles, on-the-spot report- ing, snapping pictures, advertis- ing, styling, typing are but a few of the maior and minor details in- cluded in this activity. The Chimes has proved its worth again in win- ning first place for news coverage, make-up and general excellence at L.A.C.C. For two years it has achieved honors at St. Mary's Col- lege, Moraga, by winning the sec- ond-place trophy for boys' schools paper. A few of the many special features to be remembered from this year's Chimes were: Cathe- dral Celebrates 3Oth Anniversary, Local Pigeon Haunts Seniors, Five Grads Receive Garb of Christian Brothers, Cagers Stun Loyola, and Phantoms Appear -1-sf. x? mg! Besides being a lay student aposto- late, the Y.C.S. is a leadership club. Not infrequently, leaders of all or- ganizaitons within that class lY.C.S. groups are divided into Sophomore, Junior ,and Senior classesl are to be found in it. QQ L Y.C.S. group attending day of recollection at St. Agnes. 78 Senior group discussing plans at one of weekly evening meetings. ln leadership, the key words of the Y.C.S. are observe, judge, and act. Problems affecting the students and the school are brought up in the meetings and are discussed las iudgmentl. The action, or conclusion, is not car- ried out by the Y.C.S. itself, but in most cases passed on to the representative of that organiza- tion affected since most organ- izations are represented in it.
