His fighting spirit and wise counseling have been on inspiration to each and every one of us in all our school and extracurricular activities. So it is with eminent pride that we, the students of Cathedral High School, wish to dedicate the 1960 CATHEDRAN to our beloved and revered Super- indent, the Reverend James P. Higgins. Cathedral needed it yester- day afternoon to nip an under- rated Crispus Attucks eleven, 6 -0, at CYO Stadium. Although the Irish out- classed the Tigers statistically, it took a fluke for them to win on the scoreboard. The key situation was a second-quarter pass play. Bill Perry, a fine sophomore quarterback prospect, faded to pass. The throw was shorty in fact, it was right in the hands of Attucks' Charles Chumley, a junior center playing his first varsity game. Chumley bob- bled the ball and Brian O'Connor of Cathedral grabbed the loose pigskin in the air on the Tiger 20 and ran the rest of the way for the touchdown. It was difficult to tell if At- tucks was better than it was supposed to be or if Cathedral was not quite up to its presea- son rave notices. Irish coach Joe Dezelan thinks perhaps his kids got a little too much footballg that the month-long practice s e s s i o n without a game took off the edge. Dezclz1n's Irish Score 100th Win Hammond, Ind. fSpl.J-Indi- anapolis Cathedral's powerful Irish gridders handed Coach Joe Dezelan the 100th victory of his 16 -year coaching career here last night with a spar- kling 24-13 clobbering of Ham- mond Noll. Cathedral scored its first touchdown in the last minute of the opening period, then racked up two more tallies in the next 10 minutes to ice the contest. A 41-yard run by Mike Mc- Ginley set up the opening score, which came on Phil Richart's one-yard quarter- back sneak. VVith 7:23 to go in the half, Tom Mcfiinty cracked over from the one to climax a 60-yard march. And a 35- yard pass from Richart to Brian O'Connor with 2:21 remaining made it 18-0 Noll's Pat Rokita picked an Irish fumble out of the air and 19 BREZETTE, co-CAPTAIN RICHART, C0-CAPTAIN MCGINLEY, ALL-STATE YOVANOVICH, ALL-CITY -wg my , New 3 Wg- V' Iffff' 'A sf Yu ROESINGER, Al l X 515 L 42 ' in Q lifvsi M Ui ig i p ei ,ff- .. xx I 8' ' 52 ,mf ' 4. ag I nv S f 4 K J if fl nf ff X lli,vgT' L 1 ' 1 N 1 Qi! lj f ' ' 7 . X SJ Register 5th Win By BOB WILLIAMS As a result, Cathedral kept -pace with undefeated Howe and VVood in the race for the mythical city title, Coach Joe Dezelan's seventh in 16 years. Washington and Sacred Heart are unbeaten but tied in the wings. Cathedrals next foe is Sacred Heart. Cathedral lost no time disposing' of a disappointing Shortridge team, which dropped its third straight game, second in the city series. How Shortridge up- set Richmond in the season opener remains a mystery. Cathedral took the opening kickoff 60 yards in nine plays to seize a 7-0 lead on a 24- yard dash by speedy Brian 0'Connor and Mike McGin- ley's extra point. McGinley's 20-yard jaunt to the Short- ridge 24 set it up. Shortridge went down for the count in the second quarter Irish Defeat Spartans Cathedral recorded its sixth straight Win fthird in city series competitionj before an overflow crowd of 6,000 at CYO Field on Mt-Ginley's 70- yard gallop around the left side of the Sacred Heart line on the'fourth play of the sec- ond half and his 12-yard touchdown dash by the same route about four minutes later. It was the first loss for Sacred Heart. undermanned but not out fought and crip- pled by' the absence of injured fullback Pete Speth. Sacred Heart was unbeaten but tied by unbeaten VVashing.rton gro- ing into the Cathedral contest. CATHEIDRAI. took another big step toward Coach Joe Dezelarfs seventh city title in 16 years and preserved its per- fect record in 1-1 games against ROSNER III5' 3 ,qfff Riff. iw-'iff - 19:5 HENNINGER CUNNINGHAM SCHOOLEY ALBERTS THOMPSON SWEEN EY BLAYLOCK I , an Underdog Tech 1C 1111 V' t' In the second half, Cathe- dral never penetrated the Tech 40-yard line. But the Irish took the open- ing kickoff 54 yards in 10 plays, with the help of three offside penalties against Tech, for a 7-0 lead and Tech's fum- ble on its own 17 led to the second Cathedral touchdown with 3M minutes to go in the second quarter. CATHEDRAL held what seemed to be a safe 13-0 lead at the half. But the tackling was vicious in Cathedral-Tech tradition and both had their troubles hanging onto the foot- ball. Tech, a four-time loser, didn't cross the Cathedral goal line until the closing seconds with the issue no longer in doubt. Irish Thump Ripple, 35-6, For 8th Win Fullback Mike McGinley scor- ed three touchdowns and added two extra points last night as undefeated Cathedral High School walloped Broad Ripple, 33-6 at Ripple for its eighth win. Alex Yovanovich's pass in- terception helped set up Mc- Ginley's first TD in the open- ing quarter. Tom Withrow made it a tight game briefly with Ripple's touchdown early in the second quarter when the Irish went on to score 19 more points. McGinley had a 66-yard run to set up his short plunge midway in the second quarter. Brian O'Connor ran 65 yards on the first play after Cathe- dral returned a punt. McGin- ley scampered 16 yards after Cathedral recovered Jack Kel- ler's fumble. Tom McGinty scored the final TD in the third quarter on a short plunge. He helped the score earlier with a 20- yard pass interception. Scccina inth Victim f Irish By BOB WILLIAMS Now only one game from his seventh city championship in 16 years and his second un- beaten team in eight years, Coach Joe Dezelan dressed 42 players 112 sophomore-sl and he cleared the bench in the second half in a merciful ges- ture. Cathedral rolled up 316 yards on the ground in the first half alone. Sophoniores Bill Perry and Gary Tofil, the son of VVash- ingrton coach .Ioe Tofil, got the last two touchdowns for the Irish in the fourth quarter. Only winless Manual stands between Cathedral K9-OJ and at least a share of the mythical city cham- pionship. From the time McGinley raced 72 yards around left end with a pitchout on the first play of the game. Scecina was hopelessly outclassed. McGinley also scored the extra point. Bill Roseman galloped 42 yards the next time the Irish got the ball and McGinley added another extra point to make the quarter score 1-1-0, Brian O'Connor swept right end for the T1-yard distance at 7:58 of the second period and McGinley tallied his second touchdown on a 68-yard jaunt with 2:02 on the clock in the first half. Fulllrack Tom Mc- Ginty rammed across for the extra point that gave Cathed- ral a 27-0 lead. FOILOVVINCQ M c Cl i n l e y's eye opener at the outset, Sce- cina marched from its own 24-yard line In the f'atliedral 30, Set-cina's deepest penetra- tion under its own power.
