Roman Forum and Mertlnae Church PUBLICATIONS I D f r American Export Line: I After last year's fiasco it was brought sharply to the students' attention that any yearbook bases its success entirely on student cooperation. The old idea of letting the other fellow do the work, while everyone else en- joyed the benefits, fell very flat. The seemingly impos- sible came to be-no yearbook. For the few who didn't care, there were the many who were keenly disappointed. But there was a lesson to be learned from that failure. A group of industrious and energetic students made up their minds that a like circumstance would not hap- pen again. Starting early in the year this group was de- termined to have a complete yearbook. The goal that they set for advertising was easily reached and passed. Much credit is due Charles Wagner, who was Business Manager, and who kept the ad-getters on their toes. Martin McDermott, the Editor of this year's book, really kept things humming with the many extra hours he spent working on the book. To all those who worked hard and who gave freely of their time to make this book a suc- cess, we extend our thanks and congratulations. Cathedrun Toj1lef1.'M. McDliRMOT'l'. Ijdilor: R. KIZLLEY, T. The Megaphone Providing the students with thorough, accurate news stories, concise editorials, lively sports stories, plus the addition of two punchy columns, THE MEGAPHONE. Cathedral's student publication. has completed its 29th year of serving Cathedral- ities. VC'ith john Kos as Editor, and Tom Murphy and XX'illiam Munshower as Assistants, the Staff of the '49-'50 Megaphone has fitted smoothly into the positions of those that came before. However, the student newspaper underwent a few alterations. The Meg was prepared and distributed to the students once each month, instead of following the original six weeks schedule. Its size was reduced to meet the expense of earlier distribution, but the quality of paper remained the same. All in all, the l00'Q student publication was far superior to those of the past. It brought its material up-to- date, as well as increasing it in interest. Much credit is due to those Cathedral students who took it upon themselves to bring their fellow students this very popular and accredited school paper. But it must be remembered that were it not for the faculty sponsor, Brother Viator, the journal- istic aspect of making up and laying out the paper would have never been gained. It was readily seen that the weeks of practice were bearing fruit, for the concert was indeed admirable. Music to suit every mood, and every age, was presented with freshness and gusto. From Shubert's Unfinished Sym- phony to Nell, the Farmer's Daughter U zur lejl: Robert Kelly, Master of Ceremonies, muggs a little. was quite a leap, but the Band took it in full stride. It only further proved that whether you were long-hair or hep -the Band had music up its sleeve to please you. It must be noted too, that the solo work was exceptionally good. Outstanding among the soloists was Don Wigal, at the piano, with Repartee -in which the Band and Don took turns juggling and blending melodies. The ensemble demonstration at intermission time was well received. Of par- ticular note here was the trio of oboe, flute Upper rigbl: Brother john, C. S. C., directs the full ensemble. Following several weeks of intense practice, which brought sweat to the brow of the anticipating gridsters, the Irish were groomed and raring to take the road they hoped might lead them to hold the City Title. They were alert in mind and strong in body. They understood that the road that lay ahead was to be a grueling one, but inevitable to elude. CATHIZDRAL I4 XX'IZSTFllZLD 0 In the initial game of the new season, playing host to the Xwestheld eleven, the Irish marched to their first victory. Al- though the game was played on even terms throughout the Grst stanza, the Cathedral- ites proved too much for the Xwestfield squad when they got rolling, and copped a fast two T. D.'s in the second period. The first game of the season also marked the opening and dedication of the approxi- mated S120,000 C. Y. O. Football Stadium. In an address given by the Most Reverend Paul C. Schulte, Archbishop of Indian- apolis, during intermission, the primary purpose of the stadium was given as: A place to build youth of strong body and impenetrable character. To enduce better sportsmanship among the participants, and this in turn would bring about a greater appreciation of the sport itself. Both Cathedral touchdowns were ac- counted for by two newcomers to the var- sity squad. The Grst on a nine-yard sprint by Left Halfback, Gene Mangin and the other on a nineteen-yard jaunt by Quarter- back .Ioe Turk. jim Roberts kicked both extra points. CATHEDRAL 7 XVASHINGTON 7 The Irish met the Continentals from Washington in one of the most outstand- ing gridiron displays recorded in the Irish football annals-a three quarter tussle and both teams held scoreless! Midway in the fourth period, following four consecutive attempts to crack the Irish wall, the Con- tinentals managed to tally as a result of a blocked punt. But you can't get an Irish- man down ! VC'ith a combination of pulling, and passing the Cathedralites started their eighty-two yard drive northward. A pass from Carl Accomando to Don Barton clinced fourteen of the eighty-two yards. Then a pass, followed by a run, climaxed by a line plunge by Barton after a thirty yard aerial from Accomando to .lim Roberts, and the score was all tied up fol- lowing Roberts' conversion. The Irish gained eighty-four yards by rushing and one hundred ten through passingg they completed eight of nine aerials attempted. The Wfestsiders totaled ninety-seven yards on the groundg sixty by plassingg and hit three of an attempted eig t passes. CATHEDRAL 9 BLOOMINGTON 13 Bloomington and Cathedral, having met only twice previous to the 1949 scrap, in which the Irish fell two consecutive times, I9-0 and 13-0, squared off on the Southern- ers field and gave evidence of being the most breath-taking battle of the season. Beech Grove was halted by the excellent defense put into action by the Irish, but dealt the Cathedralites their first downing with a remarkable showing in set shots from behind the circle. They were running 1-0 as they squared off against the Rockets from Ripple in a hotly contested tussle that brought added zip to the Irish. Ripple, as Beech Grove, was stymied when they attempted to crack the strong de- fense mastered by the Irish, but with the three- man combo of guards, D. Campbell, Camp- bell, and center B. Hollanbeck, Ripple added 30 to their grand total and edged the Cathed- ralites 43-35. Dean Cunningham brought home 14 points but the Irish lacked in charity tosses sinking ll of a possible decisive 20 at- tempted. The Continentals were ready, the ax was sharpened to make the kill, and the truth, the Irish were the under-dog. The facts were on the table, but it took all four quarters of per- sistent hacking to move past the Irish by a slim 47-44. The game was fast all the way with the Blue and Gold lads one higher than the Continentals at the first stop. Washington clicked in the remaining three with a set shot plus two charity pointers in the last stanza to cinch the battle by an annulling 4 points. Southport was next on the Cathedral roster. The Irish had fallen three consecutive times previous to the Irish-Southport squabble and a defeat by the lanky Cardinal five was almost inevitable with the latter opponent ranking high in state ratings, but if a defeat was there, so was a fighting spirit. Center Dave Bertram, mastering an under-basket hook-shot gave Southport 23 points while jack Armstrong followed with 15. Height under the hoop hindered Irish chances for victory, but did not keep guards Bob Springer, Ed Gaughan, and Captain Dean Cunningham from totaling 11 apiece. Gene Painter's field goal put the Irish in command with a minute left. In a Cathedral stall, Nyers stole the bouncing pigskin and raced to score the descisive points. O'Donnell was tops for Cathedral with a total of twelve. Opposing Redskin, Nyers led the Manualites with fifteen points. Finis, Manual 46, Cathedral 45. Number eleven game featured Greenfield and once again the Irish went down in battle 41-39. Cathedral was on the short end of a 13-12 first period score, but fought back by half-time to lead 26-23. This drive was high- lighted by the splendid backboard handling of Captain Dean Cunningham. Both squads chilled considerably in the final two frames and at the end of three it was 33-31 favoring the host cagers. The Hoosier Hysteria was at its peak as the automatic time was sounded, Greenfield trailed then by a slim 38-37. Short- ly afterwards Bob Klieman of the visitors hit R. Springer, G. Painter, C. Kirkhoff 109 two counters and the Irish could only con- tribute a pair of charity tosses. The road was extremely rough, but the Irish marched on to meet Batesville. It's true, the material was new and somewhat lacking, but the bad breaks were dehnitely to excess. Cathedral teed-off on the Batesville floor, started slow to trail in the early minutes, then introduced an exceptionally fast break and whipped up a 6-6 draw at the first stop. Bull- dog, jim Schorr lent a helping hand in the second quarter and the hosts moved two up at the close, 15-13. The lead changed hands in the third period with Cunningham grab- bing a total of eight, boosting the reading to 26-25, C. H. S. Last quarter results found the Irish trailing from the floor nine points to the Bulldog's fifteen. Gene Painter showed for the first time in four rounds, claiming seven of Cathedrals final nine. The gun sounded. the board read: Cathedral 35, Bates- ville 40. Baseball Many years ago baseball was just a substi- tute sport at Cathedral. a sport for those boys who xx ere interested in athletics but who had missed Ollt in the basketball and football qual- l6C2lIl0Ilf,. But recently Cleon Reynolds and joe Dezelan, yt ith the help of the faculty, have increased their efforts to bring Cathedral base- ball to its high standardv-that standard being a major sport equal to football and basketball. lt does not draw the students in general be- cause the facilities are not up to par. One par- ticular example is that we do not have the seating capacity but we hope in the near future our new athletic Held will remedy this. It takes a lot of hard work to make anything. A team starts right out at the Hrst touch of spring and continues right up until the season ends. The coaches start with only a few returning letter- men and a handful of eager and enthusiastic boys, who have high hopes of being able to play baseball for Cathedral. A boy who has ambition and athletic count will come through and finish with a good record. The gloves are put away, the shoes kicked off, and everybody is happy with the thought that next year will be even a better year at Cathedral. Buck rote. left in right: Coach C. Reynolds. C.
