PREFACE We have chosen as the theme of our book, Saint Francis, the Little Poor Man of God, Our generation centers its in- terests mainly on happiness, comfort, and success from a world- ly standpoint. The ideals of Francis represent a contradiction to those that are popular now. Certainly he was unique in his time, if not in all time, and in his daily life, in his search for God, in his relations with his fellow men, in his love and in his sufferings, there lies waiting for us today, a source of noble values, both spiritual and social, which are of utmost importance. His Canticle to the Sun, which we have reprinted on the division pages, is an expression of Christian gratitude and con- fidence. ln imitation of Chrst, the love Francis had for God, reflected itself in his love for his neighbor. He had a relation- ship to everything, to man, to beasts, birds, the sun and moon, fire and water. Francis' philosophy of love and peace is expressed in his prayer: Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love, where there is injury, pardon: where there is doubt, faith, where there is despair, hope: where there is darkness, light, and where there is sadness, joy. O, Divine Master, grant that l may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to under- stand, to be loved as to love: for it is in giving that we receive, it is in par- doning that we are pardoned: and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. So spoke Saint Francis of Assisi to his companions seven hundred years ago, and the same words still go out to our world of today that hungers for God, for peace, and for social justice.
