HISTOR' MOBILE With the faith of a man who believes in God, and the hope of a man who believes in man, I declare 1964 to be New Jersey's Tercentenary Year and wel- come all Jerseymen, and all to whom we may be a friend, to join in this glad occasion. Richard J. Hughes Governor We have chosen the Tercentenary of New Jersey for the theme of the i964 Cathedral, with emphasis on the priceless heritage of the city of Trenton. lt became famous because of the Two Battles of Trenton, and much of the fighting took place on land where St. Mary's Cathedral and our school build- ings stand. The Cathedral Rectory is on the site of the Stacy Potts home, which was the headquarters of Colonel Johann Gottleib Rall, Hessian com- mander, who was mortally wounded. His troops were quartered in St. Michael's Church directly across the street. Trenton was twice the temporary capital of the United States, T784-1799, and from the steps of the Hunterdon County Courthouse on South Warren Street the Declaration of Independence was first read publicly. The Honorable David Brearly, who aided in the framing of the Constitution of the United States, and was Chief Justice of New Jersey, is buried in St. Michael's Church- yard. ln l79O Trenton became the capital of New Jersey. As the State of New Jersey enters its fourth century, it will strive, as Governor Hughes suggested in his proclamation, to add to a rich heritage, to eliminate, root and branch, injustices that have grown too long and to see with clearer eyes why all must share the fruits of freedom that have been man's in New Jersey for three centuries. 5 fi
