STATE HOUSE ln l79O, Trenton, which had been the scene of two Revolutionary War battles, became the official capital of New Jersey. An Act to provide suitable buildings for the accommoda- tion of the Legislature and public offices of the State was passed the next year. Land for the State House was acquired from Joseph and Susannah Brittain for the sum of 5 shillings. ln V794 the Capitol was ready for Legislative sessions. New Jersey's first Capitol, measuring only 60 by lOO feet, would seem a quaint little building today. A bay at either end contained chambers for the Assembly and Council. Top- ping the rough stucco structure was a belfry and, in l806, a bell weighing 38l pounds was added, lt was used to summon legislators to meetings and occasionally, to sound a fire alarm, As the State grew and its government be- came more complex, additional facilities were needed. ln l795, a separate building had to be erected to house the offices of the Secretary of State. Since that time the Capitol has undergone many changes and additions to meet the growing needs of New Jersey. .... E IDR
