Richard J. Hughes Governor We have chosen the Tercentenary of New Jersey for the theme of the i964 Cathedral, with emphasis on the priceless heritage of the city of Trenton. lt became famous because of the Two Battles of Trenton, and much of the fighting took place on land where St. Mary's Cathedral and our school build- ings stand. The Cathedral Rectory is on the site of the Stacy Potts home, which was the headquarters of Colonel Johann Gottleib Rall, Hessian com- mander, who was mortally wounded. His troops were quartered in St. Michael's Church directly across the street. Trenton was twice the temporary capital of the United States, T784-1799, and from the steps of the Hunterdon County Courthouse on South Warren Street the Declaration of Independence was first read publicly. The Honorable David Brearly, who aided in the framing of the Constitution of the United States, and was Chief Justice of New Jersey, is buried in St. Michael's Church- yard. ln l79O Trenton became the capital of New Jersey. As the State of New Jersey enters its fourth century, it will strive, as Governor Hughes suggested in his proclamation, to add to a rich heritage, to eliminate, root and branch, injustices that have grown too long and to see with clearer eyes why all must share the fruits of freedom that have been man's in New Jersey for three centuries. 5 fi His Excellency The Most Pleverend George W. Sister Mary Charitas, Principal of Cathedral High School, uses her boundless energy and forceful character to keep each school day running smoothly. 9 Sister Mary Jerome VICE PRINCIPAL IO DEDIC TID As a classroom teacher, as senior class advisor, as previ- ous head of the Mathematics Department, and as Vice Principal, Sister Mary Jerome has rendered valuable service to Cathedral High School for many years. Although in an administrative position, Sister Jerome has never lost the familiar touch. As a result of her wide experience, she appreciates the problems of both faculty and students and is always ready with a word of encouragement. On behalf of the many students who have had the privi- lege of knowing her, we, the Class of l964, are proud to dedicate this Cathedral to Sister Mary Jerome, Sister Ierome takes time out from Senior counseling to check Geometric Aptitude Tests. An Act to provide suitable buildings for the accommoda- tion of the Legislature and public offices of the State was passed the next year. Land for the State House was acquired from Joseph and Susannah Brittain for the sum of 5 shillings. ln V794 the Capitol was ready for Legislative sessions. New Jersey's first Capitol, measuring only 60 by lOO feet, would seem a quaint little building today. A bay at either end contained chambers for the Assembly and Council. Top- ping the rough stucco structure was a belfry and, in l806, a bell weighing 38l pounds was added, lt was used to summon legislators to meetings and occasionally, to sound a fire alarm, As the State grew and its government be- came more complex, additional facilities were needed. ln l795, a separate building had to be erected to house the offices of the Secretary of State. Since that time the Capitol has undergone many changes and additions to meet the growing needs of New Jersey. .... E IDR ,, K MW.. M.. 6.-,,-,.. Afv' Mike, this is no time to be washing your hair! They were however, forced to quarter troops in private homes, until the situation became intol- erable. The Barracks were constructed in l758-l759 to relieve this condition. During the Revolution it was used by both British and Continental troops, and before the First Battle of Trenton, fifty Hessian soldiers lived there. The building is nationally known as an outstanding architectural example of colonial barracks in the United States. At present, the Barracks bear the original British seal and serve as a museum for many antiques, a section of the Washington Arch, Colonial currency, documents, pottery, and firearms of the period prior to 1800. s s s CL S S Five seniors in Political Geogra- phy class discover-the earth is round! WILLIAM TRENT HOUSE In l7l9, two years before he came here to live, William Trent, for whom the city was named, built Bloomsbury Court, known as the Trent House today. This beautiful mansion stands on South Warren Street to this day as a permanent reminder of the distinguished statesman, who contributed so much to both Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Trent house was the scene of many social events in Colonial days and afterwards. lt is said that: George Washington and his lady enjoyed the hospitality of Bloomsbury Court, and the Marquis de La Fayette. Ro- chambeau, and other noted Frenchmen were entertained there. lt has also been a resi- dence of three former Governors. The restor- ation of the house was started in l934. Today it is more than eighty per cent original and is preserved as a museum. - CTI ITIE A wild Cro Ns 40 wd rounds up votes for Peggy Sawyer. Here, General George Washington, by executing one of the most brilliant tactics of his military career, struck a stunning blow at British mili- tary superiority in the Revolutionary War. The crossing of the Delaware River at McKonkey's Ferry by Washington and his army, in the early morning ot December 26, l776, was the strategic move that made possible the subse- quent victory that was the turning point in the Revolution. Before taking up the march to Trenton, Washington is said to have rested at the Old Ferry House, now maintained by the State ot New Jersey as an historic shrine in Washington Crossing Park. Combining determination and fight with all around good ball-handling, the Frosh squad was able to win all but one of its games by lop-sided scores. For these freshmen it was the.first time they had played together as a single team, However, with the fine coaching of Mr. Phil Kecmer, their individual abilities were combined to form a smooth running unit, excelling in both defensive and offensive plays. N T69 SWAMP ANGEL Monuments in Trenton commem- orating the Civil War are few in comparison with the number that mark the Revolutionary War. One of the most popular, the three- hunclred pounder Parrot gun, the Swamp Angel, had nothing to do with Trenton's participation in that war. It was used by Union General Gillmore in the swamps west of Morris lsland near Charleston, South Carolina. The Union army, at the time, was bombarding the Confed- erate forces under General Beaure- gard in Charleston, about five miles away. On the morning of August 22, at l :3O o'clock, the first shell with a percussion fuse to be used in the United States was fired from the l'Swamp Angelf' lt was also the first poison-gas shell ever fired into a city. On its thirty-sixth shot the breech of the Swamp Angel blew out of its jacket. The battle ended in a Union victory on September 7, l863. Later, the Swamp Angel was purchased with other condemned weapons and sent to the Trenton lron Works to be melted down, The gun was identified and set up as a monument and is now located in Cadwalader Parkt PHI G PORT CROSS CDU RY Front Row: T, Gian-Grasso, J.
