Balser Mrs. Patricia Barrow a movementfor equal treatment ofall races in the state. The 1966-67 school year proved to be the last in which religious outnumbered lay teachers at Grif- fin. Father Charles Warlop, Father Kenneth Fagarason. Bro. John Penca were new to the faculty as were Mrs. Ferol Henry, Mr. Carl Garver, Mrs. Elizabeth Balser and Mrs. Pat Barrow. The Viatorians had launched a self-evaluation of all ofthe schools in which they taught and this put some pressure on the faculty. Knowing that the com- munity would have to withdraw from at least one of its commit- ments the fear that the low sala- ries paid the Viatorians at Griffin might become a decisive point as decisions were made on the pro- vincial level. The Civil Rights movement was at its peak and the students were treated to a debate between Fathers Malette and Clements of Chicago's Intercity program which proved to be a very stimu- lating and provocative assembly. ln November everyone was shocked to learn that Father Spiekerman had died after a sud- den illness of only a few hours. His sudden death led to an out- pouring of love for this man who had done so much for Cathedral! Griffin students. In his tribute to Father Spiekerman one of the students wrote: There was only one way to impress Father Spiek- Coach Bob Teater's class of 66 city champions. erman. By exhibiting a great de- sire to achieve a goal anyone could have Father's help and en- couragementg the greatest tribute was his respect? Mr, Richard Turasky took over the band and continued the planned events of the year. The band lost none of its spirit and continued to win awards and acclaim in State con- tests. Under Father Leahy's direc- tion, the Student Council was re- vitalized, a new constitution writ- ten and adopted, and homeroom representatives elected as part of the Council for the first time. ln July Father John Tobin who had served in many capacities over many years at both Cathedral and Griffin passed away. The graduating class of 1966 numbered 130.

The football team posted a per- fect season and won both the City and Conference Championship trophies. The cross country team, brand new to Griffin, capped its first season by bringing home the City Championship. Mr. Muraw- ski coached this team. For the third year in a row, the basketball team won the Capitol Conference title. Annual retreats had been part of the CathedralfGriffin expe- rience since the beginning. For the first time the format of the re- treat was changed. Individual re- treat months for each class ap- peared on the scene. Besides the conferences given by the retreat masters, faculty members con- ducted discussions in the class- rooms and speakers were brought in to lead group discussions. The long periods of inactivity which had plagued both faculty and stu- dents ofthe past were eliminated. Most agreed that it was one of the most effective retreats ever. A perfect season resulted in City and Conference titles. Retreats included private meditation. ff' 1 23 Zigi jjgfgf-27 .f Qi 140 F etfva-.1
