Fr Nowak s golfteam runners up In conference rompetition. Mr. Teater took the football team to yet another City Cham- pionship. The basketball team under the coaching of Mr. Belz posted a 17-10 season, and they too took the City Championship title. The swimming team was in only its second year but placed second in the City Swimming Meet. Thanks to Fr. Hopkins bowling was reintroduced as an intramural sport. Both the track and golf team had successful sea- sons and grew in popularity. A fairly new club, the history club, continued a tradition begun by its moderators, Mr. Bob Hull and Mr. Rudin and held its an- nual Roman Orgy in the cafe- teria.

The school was used frequently by outside organizations. A gen- eral memorial service for deceased servicemen sponsored by the Knights of Columbus took place in the school and in late Febru- ary, the Diocesan Institute con- Seven hundred forty four stu- dents were enrolled for the 1965- 66 school year. Joining the faculty were Father Hopkins, Mr. Al- berto Cortes, Mr. Richard Turasky, Mr. Michael Waller and Mr. Bob Martin who remains on Alberto Cortes ducted a demonstration Mass facing the people, an innovation of Vatican ll that soon became thefnorm in Catholic parishes throughout the world. The class of 1965 was the larg- est in the history of the school, 172.6 the staff as Assistant Dean of Discipline. Constant work to update teach- ing methods had led to three types of courses being offered: general, commercial and reme- dial. Most of the students were enrolled in the general courses. ln November everyone was shocked to learn that Father Spiekerman had died after a sud- den illness of only a few hours. His sudden death led to an out- pouring of love for this man who had done so much for Cathedral! Griffin students. In his tribute to Father Spiekerman one of the students wrote: There was only one way to impress Father Spiek- Coach Bob Teater's class of 66 city champions. erman. By exhibiting a great de- sire to achieve a goal anyone could have Father's help and en- couragementg the greatest tribute was his respect? Mr, Richard Turasky took over the band and continued the planned events of the year. The band lost none of its spirit and continued to win awards and acclaim in State con- tests. Under Father Leahy's direc- tion, the Student Council was re- vitalized, a new constitution writ- ten and adopted, and homeroom representatives elected as part of the Council for the first time. ln July Father John Tobin who had served in many capacities over many years at both Cathedral and Griffin passed away. The graduating class of 1966 numbered 130.
