kj . : ,, ,V .ff Mrs, Ruth Hafel Freshmen swelled the ranks. The population grew to 653 when the l962 school year began. 226 of this number were fresh- men. Father Stachura became Dean of Studies and Bro. Dupuis. Registrar. Fr. Deslauriers and Father Paul continued in their jobs. Father Edward Shaw had joined the Viatorians in the pre- vious year and Fr. Eugene Hoff- man and Fr. Julius Kirchgessner also took up teaching duties. Miss Val Shurrager. Mrs. Alice Car- penter and Mrs. Marion Lilly joined the growing number of lay teachers on the faculty. Mrs. Ruth Hafel had joined Mrs. Glea- son inthe growing business de- partment in the previous year. Mrs. lsabel Deloney also arrived to join Clara in the office. She is still a member of the Staff of the school. The football team once again snatched the City title as did the baseball team. The sports teams had very good years. Both the football and base- ball teams won City titles, the basketball team posted an 18-8 season and the track team also did well. The Industrial Arts Club was formed and the French stu- dents began their own newspaper, dubbed, Le Grtffbn. The science department organized a series of seminars for students which proved to be popular and success- ful. Further success came at the District Solo and Ensemble The prize winning band members of 61. Charter members ofthe Industrial Arts Club. Music Contest with Fr. Spieker- man's musicians winning I3 first prizes and I4 second prizes among the 27 students entered. Eleven first and two second prizes were won by the 13 students who entered the State Science Fair. Of 32 Illinois State Scholarships won by students in the high schools of the city, I3 went to Griffin stu- dents. The ltalian Dinner served 5,000 people that year. One hundred twenty graduated in June of 1961. Teachers don 't always teach! Emi
