The new foreign language department. In the Fall of 1960 there were 633 students enrolled in Griffin High School. The faculty had grown to thirty-four, twenty-four of them Viatorians. On the aca- demic scene, the faculty voted to set up boards to handle many matters that had always fallen on the shoulders of the administra- tors. Two of these boards, one on discipline and one on academic matters. functioned quite we-ll. The school also began to be de- partmentalized according to sub- ject matter. The sports teams had very good years. Both the football and base- ball teams won City titles, the basketball team posted an 18-8 season and the track team also did well. The Industrial Arts Club was formed and the French stu- dents began their own newspaper, dubbed, Le Grtffbn. The science department organized a series of seminars for students which proved to be popular and success- ful. Further success came at the District Solo and Ensemble The prize winning band members of 61. Charter members ofthe Industrial Arts Club. Music Contest with Fr. Spieker- man's musicians winning I3 first prizes and I4 second prizes among the 27 students entered. Eleven first and two second prizes were won by the 13 students who entered the State Science Fair. Of 32 Illinois State Scholarships won by students in the high schools of the city, I3 went to Griffin stu- dents. The ltalian Dinner served 5,000 people that year.
