The new foreign language department. In the Fall of 1960 there were 633 students enrolled in Griffin High School. The faculty had grown to thirty-four, twenty-four of them Viatorians. On the aca- demic scene, the faculty voted to set up boards to handle many matters that had always fallen on the shoulders of the administra- tors. Two of these boards, one on discipline and one on academic matters. functioned quite we-ll. The school also began to be de- partmentalized according to sub- ject matter. One hundred thir- teen seniors graduated in the first commencement exercises held in the new school, including James Fanale who was the latest in a long line of vocations from Springfield to persevere in the Viatorians. Mrs. Foster James Fanale, 1st Grwn graduate to be a Viatorian. Father Wayne Dupuis, C.S.V. Principal, 1974-1977 Father Dupuis came to Griffn High School as a Brother in 1959 and remained until 1966. He taught Business subjects. In 1961 he became Registrarfor the school and in 1964 was appointed Treasurer ofthe school. In 1966 he left Springheld to enter the Viatorian Seminary in Washing- ton, D. C. Ordained a priest in June of 1970 and was assigned to Alleman High School in Rock 1s- land, Illinois Father Dupuis re- turned to Griffinfor the 1973-74 schoolyear. ln January of1974, he was appointed to succeed Fa- ther Heitjan as principal. Like several of his predecessors, he knew Grifhn well, having served in various positions over the years. His term as principal saw the student bodr increase in numbers to such an extent that some remodeling ofthe building was needed to accommodate all who wanted in. The old offices and part of thegfaculty residence were converted to classrooms and office use. Father Dupuis now serves as college counselor at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
