The band continued to put on spec- tacular shows and win awards for excellence throughout the State. flst rowfacing, secondfrom rightj Again graduating seniors won thirteen Illinois State Merit Schol- arships. One ofthe ll2 graduates of 1959 was John Corredato, the current pastor of St. Joseph's par- KZSMQQ Father Eugene Lutz, C.S.V. Many colorful and unique men and women contributed their tal- ents to Cathedral and Griffin over thehfifty years of their existence. One ofthe most popular of these was Father Lutz. Father Lutz was a member ofthe armedlforces in World War ll and spent several years as a prisoner of war in a Japanese concentration camp. Following his release he decided to become a priest and entered the Clerics of St. Viator. Follow- ing ordination in 1954, Father Lutzjoined thefaculty at Cathe- dral and remained through 1962. Father Lutz was one ofthose men who met the student as a friend but retained their respect in the classroom. He introduced boxing as an extracurricular ac- tivity and saw to it that disputes between students were settled peacefully with the gloves. The Viatorian community took advantage of his ability to deal efl .fectively with young men and tapped him to work with its can- didatesjor religious life. Today Father Lutz resides in McHenry, Illinois, thelformer summer camp ofthe Viatorians, and now a retreat center andparish com- munitylfor residents ofthe area. 5-1
