54 Variety Show. The tradition was sinking. Bro. Eugene Weitzel Bro. john Marschall Bro. Daniel Reardon When school resumed in Sep- tember, 474 students crowded through Cathedrals doors. Among those greeting them for the first time were a new Dean of Discipline, Father Robert Hop- kins, and Father George Neych who was to remain at Griffin until the present as teacher and then as librarian. This year also saw the arrival of the first permanent laywoman, Mrs. Eleanor Gleason who also remains on the staff to- day. An alumnus of Cathedral, Brother Eugene Weitzel arrived along with Brothers John Mar- schall and Daniel Reardon continued to direct the cafeteria. Bro Raymond Wilken Brother Raymond Wilken Mrs. Eleanor Gleason One of thejirstfemale teachers to join the almost totally male staff was Mrs. Eleanor Gleason who came to Cathedral in 1956 and remains to this day. Mrs. Gleason s husband, Luke, had been Athletic Director at Cathedral for several years, and she arrived with some knowledge ofthe school and its student bod V. Over the years she has taught most ofthe business sub- jects as well as business math and consumer education. It took nearly 30 years but she saw the last ofthe old standard type- writers hnally replaced by modern electric machines and remains en- thusiastic about the computer age and looksforwara' to introducing the latest technology to the busi- ness students at Grifhn. Always a gracious ladv, Mrs. Gleason re- mains a valued member of the Grifhn community.

Three other priests who made a decided impact on the school, and not previously mentioned, continued their fine work: Fathers Raymond Field, Arnold Perham and Charles Maranto. By midyear, Father Perham and Brother Weitzel had com- pletely reorganized the vocational guidance programg seniors would now take yearly general aptitude tests and all students were to take the Kuder Preference Test. The football team posted a rec- ord that resembled the glory years C6-0-21 and easily captured the city title. 1957 City Champs.
