Fr. Robt. Hopkins Fr. Ed Shaw A large number of graduates appeared in June of 1954. . . 92, exactly the number of freshmen students the school had when it opened in l930. This was also the last year that Father Nolan would be at Cathedral. He had spent twenty- two years at the school. Over the many years he had spent in Springfield. he had been the quiet but rock-solid influence in the lives of his fellow Viatorians. For the last six years of his stay he had also served as pastor of Sherman. Flamboyant manner- isms, a unique teacher and main- stay of countless pep rallies, Father Nolan would definitely be missed at Cathedral. Father Walter Nowak joined the faculty, and the new brothers on the staff were Patrick May, John Milton and Peter Vautrin. The football team had a better year than the season before with a 5-3 record. The basketball team tied for the City championship, were runners-up in regional play and finished with a 12-l 1 record. Father Spiekerman continued the tradition of excellence with the variety show, which featured a rapidly developed orchestra. An interesting note: the staff consisted of sixteen Viatorians and the two coaches. The total sa- lary for the Viatorians was 59,000 for the year, but still records show that the school was having diffi- Runners-up in Regional play Cultieg in meeting its financial ob- Fr. wenty-five years had passed since the opening of Cathedral Boys High School in 1930, and the administration and staff spent a great deal of time preparing for the Silver Anniversary of the school. Decisions at the plate. The yearbook for that year opened with a brief history of the school under its six principals. Mr. Gleason had resigned at the end of the previous school year and the new Athletic Direc- tor was Mr. Jack Finigan with Mr. Joseph Beja as his assistant. New clubs were appearing on the scene, the Slide Rule Club and the Camera Club being twog Father Spiekerman continued to direct the Variety Show which was becoming ever more elabo- rate, but even more time consum- ing. The Silver Jubilee Celebration begun late in the 1954-55 school year culminated in a major event held on St. Viator's feast day, 1955. Since St. .Ioseph's parish had been given to the Viatorians at the same time as Cathedral was opened, ajoint celebration of both anniversaries was held. Father Donald Glenn, C.S.V. of PEVHILIFES. St. Joseph's and Father Joseph Sum from the school organized the activities. A Solemn Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated by Bishop O'Connor, was the high- light of the 25th anniversary events. Many former faculty members and many alumni were present for the mass and banquet following. This year also saw the arrival of Fr. Hopkins and Fr. Shaw. There was one other arrival, that of Father Joseph Canella. Padre as he was to become known would spend many years at Cathedral and at Griffin and became one of the most influential and best loved men in the Springfield community. WA M04 F john Finigan Jos.
